Cannibal Kitchen: The Crazies (1973)

” A Lethal Terror Snowballs Into Hell!”

So I thought I was having a bad morning today, and then I saw someone attempting to fix their car, on the side of the road, with what looked to be a plunger and a bike lock. I’m still confused, but I do think maybe my morning isn’t so bad after all. This got me thinking though. You know who else had a bad morning in 1973…and again in 2010? The one and only birthplace of the “Trixie” virus, Evan’s City, Pennsylvania. Unfortunately though, their bad fortune lasted a bit more than well, a morning. Before we move any further though, can we all just agree that The Crazies is not just a movie, but also more of a film adaptation of what our future is going to be? Don’t believe me, I know you all recall a certain train of events leading to a certain flesh hungry Floridian. Uh huh, don’t say George Romero and myself didn’t warn you.

Speaking of good ‘ole Mr. Romero, I do believe The Crazies is one of his more under appreciated movies. Yes I get it, it’s not the “Dead” trilogy, but it’s still a well thought out film that delivers immense wow factor, even despite the obvious low budget. In the movie realm, the budget was so low that for most actors Romero used many locals, friends of crew, crew, and instead of hired stuntmen, firemen and licensed fireworks professionals. He even got lucky with the burning of the house scene, being that the local fire department was going to be burning it down for practice drills and agreed to let him set up and film it.  Good karma!

The Crazies is a great film about chaos and military conspiracy. It’s a classic tale about a military combat virus that leaks into a small town, causing death, insanity, and Marshall Law. George Romero does an excellent job at portraying the emotions and struggle of the townspeople with out losing the setting that is backing up focus of this film. Even better, Breck Eisner’s 2010 re-boot was not too shabby either. So let’s get on to a not so shabby meal, that will wreak Marshal Law on your insides in the best way possible.

Stay hungry and scared everyone!
