……And in some cases we need to forget they ever had a movie originally.

HALO

From the moment that Halo made its XBOX debut people have wanted an epic movie to match the epic game storyline. There have been rumors for years now of a movie, but that has yet to happen. Halo has the potential to make a series of epic movies if they so choose to. Can you imagine a trilogy of three hour long action movies based off this game? Bet that would be enough to give the coolest of geeks a boner.

GRAND THEFT AUTO

Add another to the list of games that had rumored movies that never happened. Can anyone remember a time when the movie was in talks to happen with Eminem in the lead role? Or at least that was the rumor. There is ton of potential in a GTA movie. While there is tons of material to work with, I’m sure the best way to go about a movie like this would be to do an original story with all the GTA game elements.

PUNCH OUT!

I’m not sure we will ever see another Rocky movie and that being the case leaves a giant hole in all of our souls. Punch Out could pack a lot of action, but with the cartoony characters it would be best to go the full on comedic route with this one. If you wanted to go the full nine yards with it, I’m pretty sure Mike Tyson isn’t doing much these days.

NINJA GAIDEN

Rest a sure a movie of this nature should be in the same vein as such ninja classics as Enter the Ninja. I just want more blood included. Ninja Gaiden has become a legendary game, if for nothing else how extremely difficult the damn thing was. Since many of us will never know the joy of beating Ninja Gaiden 1, 2, or even *shutter* 3, a movie would be a suitable replacement.

DOUBLE DRAGON

Yes, there was a movie. And, yes it did suck majorly. I’ve been running this site since 2009 and since day one I’ve been BEGGING someone to make a Double Dragon movie and do it in a nice R rated/blood soaked glory. I never liked part 3, but I feel movies based off Double Dragon 1 and 2 would be an awesome one-two punch. Just please do me one favor, as much as I loved Double Dragon Neon and its comedic satire glory, please don’t bring that vibe to a movie.

FINAL FIGHT

Speaking of great “beat-em up” games, Final Fight was my second favorite behind Double Dragon. This game features the cool wrestler/governor (not Jesse Venture) Mike Hagger and friends going on what the movie would call a roaring rampage of revenge on the streets, in the subway, and in steel cages. What better way to honor that than with a live action movie of the same stuff?

BAD DUDES

Rounding out what we could call a trilogy of awesome is Bad Dudes! Again, another game that had the same format as Double Dragon and Final Fight, but this time we have two bad dudes trying to save the president from ninjas! That makes three awesome games that could make equally as awesome movies. Will someone PLEASE get started on this??

CASTLEVANIA

Well, vampires are IN these days right? Regardless if that ship has sailed or not, this game could make a super movie with a very gothic overtone. The Belmonts have been battling Dracula and his dark army for centuries, or in video game years that would be decades. Since 1986 we’ve helped a Belmont destroy Dracula and in some cases resurrect him just to kill him again! Doesn’t that sound like the stuff classic movies are made of?

SUPER MARIO BROTHERS

Once again we have a great game that had a movie we would rather forget about and just start from scratch. Especially with the technology we have today, Super Mario Brothers, could be a pretty gnarly HD 3D adventure. Maybe we could go as far as to even hint that the princess might be sleeping with an evil giant turtle behind Mario’s back.

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA

If Lord of the Rings was a little too boring for your taste, Zelda could be what the doctor ordered. The adventures of Link could be grand from start to finish and the stories need to be told in live action ways that fanboys and girls just can’t honor in their fan made movies with their cardboard swords and green screens.

Now nine times out of ten, if there’s a Top 10 on this blog its reader voted on. Today however, that’s not the case! This Top 10 is simply me picking the ten slasher films or just any 10 horror films. And this isn’t a list of films I get the most joy out of, because trust me for some we may be leaving quality at the door and just picking them for pure enjoyment and guilty pleasure. After all, things can be soo bad they are good right?

You see the list I’m listing today is for the somewhat lesser known or loved slasher films of the world. I know there are a few exceptions here and there, but your typical originals of the big four (Friday the 13th, Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) won’t be found here, even if some of their sequels that are loved to a much lesser extent does make my list.

So, that being said here is my list of “10 Under-appreciated Slasher Films I Love”, hope some of you share my fondness of some of these.

10: Halloween II (1981)

While most will live and die behind their idea that the original Halloween is the greatest slasher of all-time, I must admit that I actually would pick part two over one in most situations when I just want to watch a Halloween films. Michael Myers having a run at the world’s least active hospital has always been a cool visual to me. Maybe some of the mystic was killed, but when does that not happen in a sequel?

09 Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)

You have reached the point when they finally just said “Screw it” and made Jason pretty much a super zombie. While if you are looking for different in Friday the 13th you could look to The New Blood, I happen to like the wacky ways of part six. It also doesn’t hurt when you realize that the dude playing Jason is possible one of the nicest guys in the world.

08 Eyes of a Stranger (1981)

We have anchor women taking the law into their own hands while they have a sister in the house that comes across as possibly the greatest deaf, dumb, and blind kid since the one sung about in “Pinball Wizard”. Overall, this story of a creepy neighbor packs some cool gore and is pretty darn interesting.

07 Nightmare (1981)

Quality wise I wouldn’t call Nightmare the best in the world. But this is a movie that is just so insane at times you can’t help but want to watch it. This films packs great gore with a twist or two added in for good measure. Unfortunately if you want to check this out on DVD you have to be ready to open that wallet wide. Also unfortunately I don’t feel the movie is worth the price. Still, it is fun.

06 Humongous (1982)

It is hard to tell if Adam Green was trying to rip off Friday the 13th, Madman, or Humongous the most when he made Hatchet, but Humongous is a perfect example of a retard strong mongoloid. And this big fellow is the spawn of a woman being rapped. It isn’t Shakespeare by any means, but as far as B-String slashers go it is a hoot to watch.

05 Nightmare at Shadow Woods (aka Blood Rage) (1987)

What you have here might be the most interesting set of twins since the Cobra twins from G.I. Joe. One is a good boy that seems to get his brother’s evil deeds pinned on him while the evil one leaves people chopped up inside the woods. I really wish this movie was easier to get your hands on. Maybe one day someone like Scream Factory or Synapse can give us an awesome edition of it.

04 The Nail Gun Massacre (1985)

Since chainsaws were already taken I guess one has to just what is left in the shed before setting out on a proverbial massacre. It was also filmed in Texas if anyone has any confusion as to what iconic film this might have been trying to somewhat duplicate. Of course the end result isn’t in the same league as the movie it seems to try to duplicate someway in title, but the film sure does have some awesome art. And the visual of our Nail Gun shooter isn’t too bad either.

03 The Mutilator (1985)

I’m not sure if I really enjoy this movie this much or I’m just driven by the fact that all that is out there is old VHS tapes and awful bootlegs of it. Mutilator isn’t all that great, but it does have an atmosphere to it. Also, the quest to find a good enough print for a legit DVD release has become the stuff of legends around these parts.

02 Pieces (1982)

Here is your prime example of “so bad it’s good”. As crazy as the story in Pieces gets, I am at a point where I’m forced to consider it genius. Even if you didn’t get enough out of the awesome splatter that consumes this movie, the very last minute or so will make you remember it for better or for worse.

01 Intruder (1989)

Intruder wasn’t the type of slasher that got sequels, but it is by far one of my all-time favorites. Maybe that is because it packs what might be the coolest on screen death ever. Maybe it is because they found a way to stick the camera pretty much everywhere. Intruder stars those creative Raimi boys and their friends. This also means we get to see Bruce Campbell for all of three minutes. This might not be Evil Dead, but it is better than Thou Shalt Not Kill Expect, and it beats out about 95% of 80s slashers in my book.

No, this isn’t the 2012 year end top 10 list, but that will be coming soon enough. What I have here is a list of (in my humble opinion) the 10 best Troma released movies of all-time. And just like the yearly list a few things should be noted before I present the list. The most important thing is to keep in mind that this list contains movies that are or have been released under the Troma brand. Also, as much as I’d like to admit to such a thing, I haven’t seen every single Troma movie ever so if your favorite didn’t make the list I either didn’t like it that much OR it is possible I haven’t seen it. So with that all in mind let us get on with the list..
10: Combat Shock (1984)

Terror comes in many shapes and sizes in the never ending world of horror. But we must never overlook the little people; even if we have to look down to see them. The horror genre has produced countless “little people”. To be fair about it, most aren’t “people” they are just evil in a little package. Monsters, dolls, demons, talking bongs, we have seen it all in horror when it comes to the smaller sized villains. And YES great deals of the tiny terrors I speak of have come from Full Moon Entertainment, who if nothing else seems to have a doll fetish. I have taken the time today to compile a list of horror’s 10 best “Tiny Terrors”. I hope you enjoy it just a little bit. Get it?? A LITTLE bit?? *rim shot*

10: The IMP (Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama)

Never ever ever trust an IMP! And the 80s horror comedy, Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama showed us just why they weren’t to be trusted. Sure, they may grant you a wish here and there, but those wishes always come at a price. Thankfully for us all, IMP, is just as entertaining as he is evil.

09: Baby Oopsie Daisy (Demonic Toys)

Demonic Toys never did get on the level of that other Full Moon title, Puppet Master. But this movie franchise did OK for itself overall. And it did give us at least one very memorable toy in the form of Baby Oopsie Daisy. Full Moon never could make their minds up on his this character was male or female, but it always remained entertaining.

08: Six Shooter (Puppet Master)

When I was a kid I loved Puppet Master. Now since I have grownup, I don’t like them as much. But in the list of puppets that have been in those films, Six Shooter was one of the coolest. He wasn’t one of the originals but he was an addition that worked great in the cheese filled 90s horror scene.

07: Aylmer (Brain Damage)

Aylmer looks like a mutated penis crossed with a giant turd. He attaches himself to people’s heads and injects them with some sorta mind and senses altering substance. He also likes to sing and has the voice of a radio DJ. This could only come from the twisted and very creative mind of cult director, Frank Henenlotter, the very same director that would go on to make another tiny iconic character. We will see him later.

06: Mubia Abul-Jama (Black Devil Doll)

You want to talk some jive?? This little devil (doll) will talk some jive right back with you! Black Devil Doll is just outrageous. And for an outrageous movie, you need an outrageous character. And that character just so happens to be a tiny black devil doll who use to be a black activist, Mubia.

05: Blade (Puppet Master)

While Full Moon Entertainment has brought up a million (or so it seems) tiny terrors, Blade, of the Puppet Master franchise is the best. While the franchise it’s self is a mess as far as timelines go, Blade, was always cool as the default leader of the puppets. Now let’s be honest, those movie are cheesy, some are horrible, and they can never decide if the puppets are good or evil, but the puppets are always cool to see. And out of all of them I have always liked this puppet the best.

04: Belial (Basket Case)

One of the weirdest and most entertaining cult films you will ever find is Basket Case. And that film produced one of the strangest and most entertaining characters you may not have ever seen. Belial, is the mutated twin brother of Duane. The two share an eerie connection with one another and it made for three very nice and bloody films. If you’ve never seen these, you should change that ASAP.

03: Leprechaun (Leprechaun)

Let me make something clear, I’ve never been a big fan of these films. I hated going to “the hood” and then back to “the hood”. But I did like the original film and I did like the character at that point. Leprechaun seems like a “Chucky-lite” for a number of reasons. But giving this character his due, he has went on to become perhaps the second most well-known tiny terror in the mainstream fan base of horror.

02: Turkie (ThanksKilling)

Independent horror can make some horror icons in their own right. It’s just a shame that Turkie has only graced us with one film. This cursed turkey was hilarious in the one and only film we’ve seen him in. Word is that a sequel is in the works and I hope that film does happen. If nothing else, this movie shows us that we need to be careful where our dogs piss.

01: Chucky (Child’s Play)

Was there any doubt? Charles Lee Ray put himself inside the body of a “Good Guy” doll and the murdering bastard has been stuck there ever since. This was frightening as a kid to watch since Good Guys did look an awful lot like the My Buddy dolls that were out around the same time. But as you mature you notice the more comedic nature of Chucky. And with the news of a new Child’s Play movie in the works, we’ve not seen the last of this little guy.

Oh the FINAL GIRL! An essential part of any horror film, but mostly known for the slasher variety. When people start dropping in horror films, we have got to have one girl that is the last person left standing. And out of the millions and millions of horror films that are out there I have complied a personal list of the 10 best.

10: Jennifer Ross (Elizabeth Cox) Intruder

Nobody ever talks about Jennifer from Intruder and that is a shame. Jennifer works at a grocery store that is about to be shut down and on the very same night she learns this info her ex is stalking her and people start ending up dead. Jennifer is lesser known than anyone else on this list, but Jennifer was a damn good “Final Girl”. And when things got messy she wasn’t afraid to get messy right back. That was of course after she was done running and hiding.

09: Sally Hardesty (Marilyn Burns) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Sally goes through hell in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. And once it’s all over she probably was never the same mentally again. But she did survive and it is one of the most famous horror films you’ll ever find. So while she doesn’t really do much outside of make a very dramatic escape, you got to give this lady some credit.

08: Chris Higgins (Dana Kimmell) Friday the 13th part 3

I hate Friday the 13th part 3. I never cared at all for it and the 3D gave me a headache. Still, did dig the character of Chris. There’s nothing that really stands out about her per say, but she is very likeable. And likeable goes a long way, especially in a film where the more interesting characters die. Now had we have had a Friday the 13th where Vera was the last one standing, this list might have been a whole lot different.

07: Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) Alien

Some people just love Ripley. I myself have no issue with the character. I realize some would have her ranked much much higher up, but I just can’t do that. I can’t do that because Alien never really interested me that much. Now I’m willing to go back and give it another shot down the road, but for now Ripley will have to settle for just being happy she made the list.

06: Ginny Field (Amy Steel) Friday the 13th part 2

There are a lot of ladies that have come and gone in the Friday the 13th franchise. Ginny here was the second. Unlike the original “Final Girl” of the franchise she was smart enough never to return and risk death in future sequels. She was also smart enough to play into Jason’s mommy issues to outsmart him at the end of part 2.

05: Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) I Know What You Did Last Summer

If this was a beauty contest, Julie James would win by default. But this isn’t one of those types of competitions. Instead, Julie deals with a person who has a nasty habit of using a fishhook to do some rather nasty things. If we ignore part three (and most do) and go by the old saying of “if we didn’t see it happen it never happened”, we could say Julie more or less survives two of these films. And she looks damn good while doing it.

04: Kirsty Cotton (Ashley Laurence) Hellraiser

Kirsty, Kirsty, Kirsty. What we have here is a girl who has a bad habit of playing with puzzle boxes. But she also has a good track record of delaying the certain death that comes with it. This is a girl that outsmarted some folks straight out of hell in three different Hellraiser films. And if memory serves me correctly, isn’t she the ONLY person who could claim victory over those damn cenobites?

03: Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) Halloween

If you were to look up the term “Final Girl”, Laurie from Halloween would have a picture right next to it. She is stalked by her crazed brother for Halloween 1 and 2. He returns to stalk her again in Halloween H20. We won’t even speak of Halloween Resurrection. Laurie pretty much does what the last girl in a horror movie usually does, she runs, she screams, and she more or less survives. But Laurie also didn’t really do any of the world until H20. Without Loomis she probably wouldn’t have made it out of the original Halloween.

02: Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) Scream

Sidney Prescott has horrible luck. Four times now she has had to deal with crazy people running around trying to gut her, all while wearing a Ghostface mask. But if nothing else, Sidney is a survivor. How many other “Final Girls” has the success rate of Sidney? Most end up dead if they are in the sequel. Sidney here has now survived four! Let’s hope she doesn’t keep pressing her luck.

01: Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp) A Nightmare on Elm Street

It’s my personal opinion that while someone like Laurie Strode might be what the definition of the term “Final Girl” is, Nancy Thompson is what every “Final Girl” should be. In the face of danger, Nancy, didn’t just run and scream and wait for someone to save her. Nancy came up with plans and fought back against Freddy. She didn’t just luck up, she kicked his ass in the original Nightmare on Elm Street.

It should go without saying that if you clicked to read this that you will be seeing TEN big movie spoilers here. So if you want to keep on reading here you should be warned! Also keep in mind that opinions are opinions. It’s ok to have one, as long as it’s an INFORMED opinion. I consider myself informed with these since I’ve actually seen them and this is based on my personal taste. That being said, your feedback is more than welcome

10: Strange Behavior (1981)

What Happens: After a group of kids in a small town have been brainwashed by a professor everyone thought to be dead, the father of our main character charged the location of this professor not knowing he’s actually still alive only to be blindsided by his own son who has been programmed to kill his own father. In a turn of events, the son in question kills the professor in a big reveal that HE was actually the boy’s father. We are then treated to a very awkward happy ending where the boy’s not real father (but they count it anyway) gets hitched to his main squeeze as the towns teens who were brainwashed before to kill people watch in glee! The movie then ends.

Why it’s Bad: Well for one, it’s about an abrupt of an ending as you can get. Second of all, nobody apparently has to pay for their crimes due to the fact they were brainwashed I assume. That’s somewhat logical but a bit of an out. And the ending just seems awkward. It makes you wait for another foot to drop, but it never does.

09: Day of the Dead (1985)

What Happens: The zombies have stormed the fort where our scientist and our hateful soldiers lurk! John, Sarah and McDermott manage to find an escape from the zombie infested corral and head to the surface. Sarah boards the helicopter, only to be attacked by a zombie inside. Then POOF! Sarah wakes up and it was all a dream! Or at least the last part was. These three are on an island having a good ol’ time as the film ends.

Why it’s Bad: Doesn’t that “dream” ending seem rather pointless? It’s hinted at even from the start but it’s just pointless. It was designed to shock the viewer but it also doesn’t add up very well. Do we just assume Sarah and crew simply made their escape without issue? More details are needed.

08: The Innkeepers (2011)

What Happens: After a night of paranormal events, our main character, Claire, heads for the basement (not sure if that’s what they really call it but we’ll go with it) of the hotel ALONE! She trips down the stairs and smacks her head, opening a gash. After she sees some rather gnarly stuff , she attempts to make her way out of the basement. As luck would have it, the exit is chained down. Unable to escape she turns to see the main ghost of the plot. The ghost approaches and we cut to black. The next morning we pick up with the aftermath and Clair is dead. She has a history of asthma problems so it’s naturally blamed on that. BOOOOOOOOoooo!!!

Why it’s Bad: Well, there isn’t anything wrong with this ending per-say. But Clair was a really likeable character and it sucks majorly to see her die. On one hand it’s a great show of storytelling from Ti West to shock the crowd and have her actually die. But on the other it bums you out and does somewhat sour you on the film overall.

07: Black Christmas (2006)

What Happens: After all the chaos at the house is over, Kelly and Leigh are treated at the hospital. While Kelly goes for an x-ray, Agnes appears in the hospital unharmed and kills Leigh. Billy takes out a hospital employee. When Kelly returns to her room, Agnes enters through the ceiling and attacks her as well but Kelly uses the defibrillator and kills her. Billy proceeds to enters also through the ceiling and chases after Kelly. They end up in the stairway, where Kelly pushes Billy down the stairs where he is impaled on the tip of a Christmas tree, killing him. Ho-Ho-Ho, Merry f’n Christmas!

Why it’s Bad: Well you could make a case that this movie even being made was bad enough but I digress. If you want a prime example of a movie ending be dragged out to the point of being ridiculous, this would be it. They change soo much from the original Black Christmas that it hardly even looks like what it’s supposed to be. But if anything else, this movie should have ended in the house. Instead we are witness to this being dragged out waaaaay too long. And it makes an already bad movie much worse.

06: Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (1974)

What Happens: George arrives at the hospital to save Edna! He starts setting fire to zombies but it turns out that he was too late to save Edna and as she suddenly attacks him, he pushes her into a room, which is now burning. George is then shot four times by the asshole Sergeant, who didn’t like George anyway because he has long hair. In the end, our Sergent makes a comment about how he wishes George was alive so he could kill him again. When the Sergent arrives at a hotel room where he runs into Zombie George who finally takes out our jerk of a police Sergent with a choke. These zombies must be vegetarians.

Why it’s Bad: Well the movie never really tells us how these zombies work. How smart they are is never really told. But somehow George, now a zombie, finds his way to the room of the Sergent. How did he know where he was? Surely someone in the UK would notice a dead man walking along the side of the road?

05: The Descent: Part 2 (2009)

What Happens: So our main two character we are about apparently die (for real this time?) as it helps the film’s most boring character, Elen, make it out. Elen bursts through the exit of the cave, just like Sarah did when she originally escaped in part 1, and is about to call for help using her cell phone. She is then cold-cocked by Ed who hits her with a shovel and drags her back to the entrance to be food for the crawlers. As Elen recovers quietly from the hit, a bloodied crawler jumps out of the entrance as the movie ends.

Why it’s Bad: The whole movie kinda kills the good thing that was the near perfect original. The only characters anyone really care about are done in in dramatic fashion to allow someone that nobody cares about to live. But that’s ended on a sour note by a really bad swerve. This makes the brave acts of our main characters pointless. This whole film and it’s bad ending should be reason enough why some film’s don’t need sequels.

04: Christmas Evil (1980)

What Happens: Phil finally gets a damn clue and realizes that his brother Harry is the homicidal Santa he has heard announced on the news. When he figures this out he does the brotherly thing and proceeds to choke him unconscious. He loads him into the front seat of the van, and then finally Harry comes-to, KOs him, and again drives off. Here is where it gets good.. During his escape, the oncoming mob forces him and his van off a bridge. At this point the van then is shown to fly off towards the moon as a voice over reads the end of “Twas the Night Before Christmas.”..Um..Ok?

Why it’s Bad: You may want to read that last line there again..A movie that never really hints at anything in THAT sorta style, decides to take a movie that was bit like Taxi Driver in theme and end it like a cartoon. It’s a 180 from what we’ve been shown up to this point and it kinda just leaves you scratching your head.

03: Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989)

What Happens: After Loomis goes all gangsta and beats Myers unconscious, Michael is locked up in the local sheriff’s station, to eventually be escorted to a maximum-security prison. However, the stranger in black arrives and attacks the police station, shooting the policeman and causing an explosion, thus killing Sheriff Meeker and six others. At the end of the movie, Jamie walks through the station finding the bodies of gunned officers, and goes over to Micheal’s holding cell to discover that it is empty.

Why it’s Bad: Would this ending be as bad had it had any real follow up with the films to come? Probably not. And hindsight is always 20/20 as they say. But now knowing what was to come, this ending was just a total waste. Halloween would go even more in the crapper after this and this ending could be seen as the main start of that.

02: Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1994)

What Happens: It’s a pretty typical TCM movie at this point as Leatherface is giving chase to Jenny. Suddenly, a black car is seen on the road and Jenny gets into it. It’s revealed that Rothman is inside the car. He tells Jenny not to worry, apologizes for all of the events and explains that this was intended to be a “spiritual experience”. Meanwhile, Leatherface watches the black car and proceeds to start up his chainsaw and swing it around. After Jenny curses at Rothman inside the car, he tells her that he can take her to a hospital or a police station.

Why it’s Bad: This film is a mess..One of the biggest messes I’ve ever seen and the ending makes no sense at all. We sit through this thing and THAT is what they give us for the end? This was soo bad that they had no choice but to do a reboot of the franchise. And while it may not be as much on the ending as it is the movie as a whole, Renée Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey did try to buy the film and keep it from coming out. I’m sure the ending helped them decide they didn’t want it to see the light of day.

01: Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)

What Happens: Rennie and Sean run onto the New York Subway system, but are trapped by Jason. Sean pulls the emergency brake and the two escape, followed by Jason. Sean tackles Jason and Jason is electrocuted by the ground wires, seemingly killing him. The two leave the subway and come up into Times Square where Jason, still alive, follows. The two run from Jason. While chasing them, Jason disturbs four punks, who want to fight him, but Jason merely lifts up his mask to show them his face and they flee. Rennie and Sean run into a diner but are forced to run when Jason crashes through a wall to get to them. They run into the sewers, where Jason follows and kills a sanitation worker. Rennie attacks Jason with toxic waste, much of his body melting as a result. After an ensuing flooding of the sewer that Rennie and Sean manage to avoid, all that is left of Jason is a young boy lying at the bottom of the sewer with a hockey mask on his face. Rennie and Sean reunite with Toby on the streets above.

Why it’s Bad: Well in a film that should have been originally titled Jason Takes A Cruise and Briefly Stops in Manhattan, we get an ending and a movie as a whole that doesn’t make any sense at all. The spirit of Jason in boy form sometimes is deformed and he sometimes isn’t. Then when he gets this big ass sewer bath at the end it not only kills Jason but it apparently melts him down into his child form?..Yeah, folks. It makes no sense and apparently nobody knew where to go from here. Paramount would sell the rights and when Jason went to hell next, what happened after this film’s events were never explained and what did go down was quickly swept under the rug..And rightfully so.

I think the horror community has a love and hate relationship with remakes. While most recent remakes are hated (and some justifiably) you’ll find much of the remakes we got in the 80s or 90s are looked at more fondly. I’ve decided to take a closer look at remakes and I’ve decided to make a personal list of what I think are the 10 greatest remakes of all time. You might find that some could come as a surprise.

10: Friday the 13th (2009)
Some people seem to hate this one right here. My main issue is it’s more of the same we had seen in the other Friday the 13th films. Pretty much squeezing the most important parts of the first three original films together, what came from it wasn’t a classic by any means. But it was what it intended to be and that’s a Friday the 13th movie. You might not love it and I myself don’t loved it, but if you like the franchise you probably at least like this.

09: Quarantine (2008)
Do you know what the biggest sin this film committed was? Being a remake of [rec]. That of course being one of the best horror films to come along in a very long time. And when you break it all down most horror fans hate remakes of foreign films because we can’t understand why people can’t simply read subtitles. When [rec] was remade it got a name change and changed a few details. It was nearly a shot for shot remake as far as everything else went. In an alternative universe where [rec] didn’t exist, I believe more people would love this movie. I still enjoy it and I LOVE the original [rec].

08: I Spit on Your Grave (2010)
While this film wasn’t as shocking as the original was upon it’s release, it’s still a good movie. These days we’ve seen so much in film that it’s really hard to shock anyone. So you can’t go into this one thinking you will see anything that raises any bar like the original did. What we do see is a more modern take on the story with a strong lead and some bad guys that make it easy for you to hate them. I think that’s good enough.

07: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
This movie was really the one that seemed to set off the craze in remakes. That craze is still going today and we probably have this movie to still blame. A lot of people seem to dislike this now days and I really don’t get that. While it’s sequel did suck, I remember enjoying what I saw when I got a chance to see this film upon it’s release. And I also recall it getting pretty strong reviews then as well. While the zillion remakes that came after might have turned people against it, I still think it’s one of best remakes you can find.

06: Dawn of the Dead (2004)
I will be honest, the running zombies is my biggest issue with this one. Not because I’m soo stuck on this sites name that I hate every movie with a running zombie. I just hated the idea of Dawn of the Dead without slow zombies. But I did lighten up about it when I saw this for the first time. I thought it was a well paced film that wasn’t as scary as the original, but it did have it’s moments. And it had enough of those moments to make me want to watch it more than once.

05: Let Me In (2010)
The American version of Let the Right One In got a ton of groans when the news broke of it being made. I was among those that didn’t like the idea at all. Let the Right One In may very well be my number 1 vampire film of all time and it’s a perfect 10 out of 10 to me. But you know what? This movie was very good in it’s own right. It did all those things the original did and it had the very talented Chloë Moretz in the role of our vampire next door. And this movie managed to actually win over many of the people who weren’t happy about it, this guy here included.

04: The Fly (1986)
While it’s probably not that hard to remake a film from 1958 and improve upon it, David Cronenberg didn’t just remake it and make it good, he made a classic. This was a film I grew up on in the 80s and it still holds a dear place with me today. It improved upon the original in about every way you can think of and I don’t think I’ll hear anyone complain about this making the list.

03: The Hills Have Eyes (2006)
While the remakes to some of Wes Craven’s films haven’t had a more current history with being that great, the remake of The Hills Have Eyes was superb. Alexandre Aja remade this film and presented it’s plot and content on steroids. More blood, more emotion, and way more entertaining than the original ever was. And while the sequel to this remake would have the same fate as the one for the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, this film on it’s on is easily one of the best of the first ten years of the 2000s.

02: The Thing (1982)
If you’ve seen Halloween then you probably had a good idea that John Carpenter was a fan of The Thing From Another World. So in 1982 he actually went as far as to remake it and give it the more simple title, The Thing. This movie would go on to not only give us a great character played by Kurt Russell. It topped the original in such a strong way that most people have no clue it’s even a remake. How many movies on this list can say that?

01: Night of the Living Dead (1990)
No, this film never made the impact on horror like the much more popular original. But as I said in a recent podcast, it does everything a remake should do. It gives us the overall same story, but it changes just enough to keep you on your toes. This keeps you pulled in and makes it so that you really aren’t sure where it’s all going to go in the end. And you can not deny the great effect from Tom Savini here. I’ve said it a zillion times now, not only is it a great remake but it’s the second best film of the entire 1990s.

Well it’s finally here my friends the long awaited (I hope) Top 10 Horror Movies of the 90′s as voted by YOU, the reads of this blog! I’ll admit I was pretty shocked by what didn’t make the list just as much as I am shocked at some of the stuff that did make the list! Will you agree or disagree? Check it out and see!..

10: Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)
Jason Goes to Hell! Wtf. People actually voted for this piece to make the top ten? Im a life long Friday the 13th fan, and this is my favorite franchise but even I have my limits. Come on lets get real. This not really a horror movie but an amped up sci fi creature flick with Jason’s name slapped on top of it. But on the other hand this is the 90′s we are talking about. The decade was a low point of the horror genre since at least the 60′s. The only redeeming thing I can say about it is the ending was a precursor to the much better and actually fun Freddy vs Jason. Since my name is also Jason the title actually fit the bill once I got done watching this steaming pile. I actually did feel like I went to hell and back.
(Jason Lloyd – Horrorphilia)

09: The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Straddling the fence between horror and thriller, Jonathan Demme’s masterpiece ran roughshod at the Academy Awards, quite a rarity for a genre picture. But it isn’t hard to see why, given the iconically chilling performance of Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter, as well as the impeccably creepy Ted Levine, who nearly steals the show as Buffalo Bill. The quality of later sequels would be erratic at best, but the original is undoubtedly not only a modern horror classic, but a modern movie classic, period.
(B-Sol – The Vault of Horror)

08: Cemetery Man/Dellamorte Dellamore (1994)
A movie that is just as much weird and it is scary, just as depressing as it is fun, Cemetery Man aka Dellamorte Dellamore is what you might call the Donnie Darko of the horror movie world and as a result has gained a similar following over the years just the same as Darko, or any other cult classic for that matter. Not really sticking to all the Zombie rules, and including a very hot naked Zombie (you know who I’m talking about) Cemetery Man is a Zombie film that can appeal to every horror fan.

07: The Blair Witch Project (1999)
With a near-perfect marketing campaign, terrific word-of-mouth, and five of the most frightening final minutes in film, The Blair Witch Project could most certainly not be left off a list of the best 90′s horror films. It seems you either love it or you hate it. But what makes it so unique is the bare bones feel to it – the reality of it all. You feel like you are there, with those three (mostly annoying) amateur filmmakers…lost in the woods. The legend of the witch, explained vaguely in the beginning of the movie, seemed so real the town of Burkittsville, MD. had people converging on it by the boatload to explore the myth. (News flash, in case you didn’t know – the entire story is fabricated.) Hand held camera effects and portions filmed in black and white lent a total sense of claustrophobic fear – as well as nausea in many cases – of what was to come. Things continue to spook the wayward group the more lost they become, and escalate to almost unbearable proportions by the time Josh is missing. The gripping final search of the abandoned house that leads both Mike and Heather to their imminent doom is a powerful, chilling climax that gets under your skin and isn’t easily shelved in your memory. The main catch to the Blair Witch having an effect on viewers is this: it feels waaay too real. This could happen to you.
(Chris Hadden – Fascination With Fear)

06: Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998)
Halloween H20 is about the serial killer Michael Myers tracking down his sister and her son to kill them. What’s cool about this movie is it doesn’t try to be a Scream sequel or a Friday the 13th knock-off. There isn’t a hip new Michael who quizzes his victims about movies before killing them and there isn’t any skinny-dipping or summer camps. Instead we have the old-fashioned Michael Myers doing what he does best. It also has the return of Jamie Lee Curtis to the series and depicts her very realistically, as a woman prone to hallucinations, who’s overly medicated and drinks a lot. However she also still kicks serious butt, so it shows that a Final Girl may be messed up from surviving a psycho killer, but she also is strong and ready to take on the bad guy once again.
So for sticking to the feel of the series and for having one seriously amazing woman taking on The Boogeyman, I’d say Halloween: H20 is easily one of the best films of the 90′s.
(Patrick Campbell – Stabbing Stabbing Stabbing)

05: Army of Darkness (1992)
After audiences showed their love for the slapstick aspects of Evil Dead II, Raimi went balls to the wall with Army of Darkness. This is the film that gave us the smooth talking, sarcastic smart ass Ashley J. Williams that we all know and love. It may not be the scariest thing in the entire world, but it’s a hell of a ride!
(BJ-C – Day of the Woman)

04: From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
Though it takes a while for us to recognize that it’s a horror film, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’ collaboration on From Dusk Till Dawn is a thing of beauty. Going from road picture to siege picture as Salma Hayak arouses a snake (or two), it’s rich with interesting characters, entertaining bit performances from the likes of Fred Williamson and Tom Savini, and a lot of blood and guts. If you can get past Juliette Lewis, it’s a great time.
(The Mike – From Midnight, With Love)

03: Candyman (1992)
Tony Todd is usually most memorable as the deep voiced, massive coated, bloody hook handed Candyman. The movie has always been one that has tantalized my horror seeking heart and combines two things I greatly love- urban legends AND bees. Just kidding I actually hate bees, which is why I can barely watch that scene where Tony Todd opens his mouth and bees come swarming out(which are real bees by the way). The movie is clearly one of the greatest markers of 90s horror and is a true testament to the genre with minimal boobs and maximum horror. Plus there are moments of such fantastic visual imagery where you find yourself losing breath over things that are both beautiful and terrifying at the same time. The urban legend of the Candyman paired with the idea that once an urban legend has been disproved the real thing can come and get you is terrifying. Perhaps even more terrifying is where the actual basis of the urban legend comes from. For more information on the matter watch CANDYMAN. Or he’ll get you.
(Andre Dumas – The Horror Digest)

02: Scream (1996)
Director Wes Craven was always shaking up the horror genre, so it came as no surprise to me that he would make a film like Scream. It was the classic killer-stalking-teenagers formula, but Craven turned it on its ear. Sure, it had the jump-in-your-seat moments and backstory full of twists and red herrings. But in addition to those traits, Craven and writer Kevin Williamson – who was the boy wonder of 90′s scripts – made the kids smart to the genre. It was a horror film about horror fans, in a way. In many cases, it nearly broke the fourth wall with Jamie Kennedy’s character Randy practically telling everyone else they were players in a movie. Neve Campbell’s Sydney was a flawed heroine that fought against her fears and became pretty bad-ass. The villains were smart and calculating with a touch of insanity, and it all plays off the notion that kids were growing up with movies as a guiding force. For better or worse, it set the tone for “savvy teenagers/college students versus the killer baddie” well into the present.
(Dod March – WGON Helicopter)

01: Dead-Alive/Braindead (1992)
My first experience with Peter Jackson’s Dead-Alive was back in ’94, just after the film had come out on VHS if I remember correctly. Being extremely excited to find Dead-Alive at the local video store, I convinced my two buddies that we had to check it out, telling them that it was the “goriest movie ever made” based off what I had read about the film. Seeing as I was the “horror guy,” they both bought into my plea and were very excited to see something that promised to be the sickest and grossest film ever witnessed by their anticipating eyes. I remember it so well, a small living room, on a tiny TV, we waited for the unrelenting gore fest to begin! We waited, and we waited, and we waited, and it never happened. Even at the 45 minute mark, we still had hopes for a Grande Finale of grue, but we were not granted one. I looked like a chump that couldn’t back up his knowledge, well, I felt that way at least. The VHS cover even claimed that it was the goriest film of all time, but that was not the case and I was ultimately super disappointed by Dead-Alive – a movie that I was so excited about for so long.

Of course, I later discovered that I was duped into renting a version that was rated, as opposed to one that was unrated and alas, there was a second chance for Dead-Alive to drive me wild. I think that first viewing may have made my second viewing all the more better – I saw a film that had almost no gore, so anything would have been an upgrade. What I got with the unrated cut of Dead-Alive, was THE-goriest movie ever made, as stated on the VHS cover. That first watch lowered my expectations so much, that when I saw the real deal, I was blown away ten times more than if the first viewing had gone as planned. I hold Dead-Alive near and dear to my heart as a movie that makes me laugh, even without any scenes containing gore in them, but that finale, oh, that finale IS so Grande, that no other film has yet to top it in sheer volume and execution. Some people slag on it, but I will always love Dead-Alive for being a fun movie that did it bigger, better, and messier than anyone else.
