Blu-rays Coming from Doppelgänger Releasing!

Doppelgänger Releasing and Scorpion Releasing are excited the announce the U.S. Blu-ray debut of The Church (1989) by Michele Soavi on March 20, 2018 with a pre-book date of February 13, 2018.

Chicago, IL (February 122018) – The third installment in Doppelgänger Releasing and Scorpion Releasing’s ongoing series of restored films from Italian horror auteur Dario Argento, THE CHURCH is a 1989 Gothic chiller about a group of visitors trapped in a medieval cathedral who are plagued by the evil demons that have been released from the crypt beneath it.

Co-produced and co-written by Dario Argento and directed by Argento protégé Michele Soavi, THE CHURCH makes its U.S. Blu-ray debut remastered with a high definition transfer and containing a new interview with co-star Asia Argento.

THE CHURCH is set in present-day Germany in an elaborate medieval cathedral that was once the site of a massacre of a village of supposed devil-worshippers by a band of crusading knights. When the church’s new librarian (Tomas Arana, The Sect) breaks the seal of the building’s crypt, he releases a cabal of evil spirits that are contained beneath it.  At the same time, the church’s automated mechanisms are triggered, causing its doors to close and trapping everyone inside. The laws of reality soon collapse as a nightmare takes hold and claims the lives of those within one by one, threatening to unleash a supernatural pestilence upon the world!

THE CHURCH is Michele  second directorial effort, following the 1987 slasher Stage Fright, his directorial debut. Prior to directing his first feature,  worked on Dario Argento’s films Tenebre , Phenomena and Operaand on such noteworthy projects as Lamberto Bava’s A Blade in the Dark and Demons and Terry Gilliam’s The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. With THE CHURCH (which was originally intended to be the third entry in Bava’s Demons series), Soavi was given an opportunity to fully explore his dreamy, stream-of-consciousness approach to the genre, complete with rich visuals, strong set pieces, and an overall creepy atmosphere. Soavi very quickly came to be considered a horror stylist in his own right.

THE CHURCH is also notable for its evocative soundtrack, composed by the late, great progressive rock musician Keith Emerson, minimalist virtuoso Philip Glass, and the Italian prog-rock band Goblin, who previously collaborated with  Argento on his films Suspiria and Tenebre.

Doppelgänger Releasing and Scorpion Releasing will release THE CHURCH on Blu-ray for the first time in the United States on March 20, 2018 (prebook February 13, 2018). The Blu-ray, which includes a new interview with actor Asia Argento and original theatrical trailers, carries the suggested retail price of $24.95.

Chicago, IL (January 12, 2017) – Doppelgänger Releasing and Scorpion Releasing continue their ongoing series of lustrous restored editions of the films of legendary Italian horror auteur Dario Argento with the release of THE SECT, the 1991 chiller about an American schoolteacher in Germany who is terrorized by a murderous Satanic cult that is plotting to plunge the world into darkness.

In THE SECT, Kelly Lee Curtis (older sister of iconic scream queen Jamie Lee) stars as Miriam, an American schoolteacher who has been relocated to what appears to be a pleasant town in Germany. One afternoon, Miriam accidentally hits an elderly pedestrian, Moebius (Herbert Lom of The Pink Panther fame) with her car, prompting her to take him back to her house to recuperate. What Miriam doesn’t know is that their meeting was no accident and that Moebius is the elder of a dangerous Satanic sect. While at Miriam’s home, Moebius secretly drugs her and then secretes a strange insect into her nostril. Moebius’s sinister plan triggers a string of bizarre and hallucinogenic events in Miriam’s life involving nightmares, a diabolical cult leader named Damon (Tomas Arana), her magic pet rabbit, a dark well filled with mystical water and a plot involving the birth of the son of Satan.

THE SECT is Michele Soavi’s third directorial effort, following 1990’s The Church (also produced by Dario Argento) and the slasher Stage Fright, his 1987 directorial debut. Enigma Rosso (Red Rings of Fear) by Alberto Negrin will make its North American debut on Blu-ray remastered in high definition transfer thru brand new scan of the original negatives, with extensive color correction on April 10 (Doppelgänger Releasing).

Chicago, IL (February 19, 2018)  – Doppelgänger Releasing and Scorpion Releasing continue their ongoing collaboration on re-issuing Italian genre films of the Seventies and Eighties with a restored version of the 1978 giallo ENIGMA ROSSO. Directed by Alberto Negrin and starring Italian cult superstar Fabio Testi (a Golden Globe-winner for The Garden of the Finzi-Continis), the chilling mystery concerns a detective’s investigation into the savage assault and murder of a schoolgirl and the subsequent stalking of her classmates at their private school.

ENIGMA ROSSO makes its North American Blu-ray debut remastered in high definition transfer via a brand new scan of the original negatives, with extensive color correction executed in the U.S.

ENIGMA ROSSO begins when the brutally violated body of a young woman is dragged from the river. The investigating law officer, Inspector Gianni Di Salvo (Testi), is drawn to dark deeds at an exclusive girls’ school where the beautiful members of a group known as “The Inseparables” are being targeted with sinister letters and murder attempts. Following a clue in the dead girl’s diary, Di Salvo meets an unlikely ally in the form of the victim’s young sister, and as the pair begins to put the pieces together, he realizes that the school’s web of sex and homicide is more tangled then he ever could have imagined.

A prime slice of sordid shocks from the golden age of the Italian giallo, ENIGMA ROSSO is the final film in a trilogy of schoolgirl thrillers following Massimo Dallamano’s What Have You Done to Solange? (1972) and What Have They Done to Your Daughters? (1974). And, like all giallo entries, it comes complete with the genre’s requisite plot twists, psychological terror, startling violence and stylized eroticism.

Co-starring Christine Kaufmann (Town Without Pity), Ivan Desny (The Marriage of Maria Braun), Jack Taylor (Succubus), and Helga Liné (Horror Express), ENIGMA ROSSO also features a memorable score by the late Golden Globe-winning as well as Oscar and Grammy-nominated composer Riz Ortolani (The Yellow Rolls-RoyceKill Bill: Vol 1), who amassed more than 200 feature film credits in his prolific 50-year-plus career.
