After causing the Miskatonic University Massacre, Dr. Herbert West has been serving a prison sentence for the past 14 years. When Howard, a new young doctor, comes to work as the prison MD and requests Dr. West’s assistance, Dr. West discovers that Howard has something he left behind 14 years ago…

Thirteen years after Bride of Re-Animator we join Dr. West once again! This time he is spending some hard time behind bars but still catching time for some experiments. But lucky for West, a new doctor in the prison has seen some of his work first hand and wants to help him out. This leads to a strong but kind of bland plot that does deliver on the gore if nothing else. My main issue is at times it seemed like Jeffery Combs was a little off in his Dr. West performance. Sure, he gives us the great character at times, but there are also times where it just doesn’t seem like we are watching the good (sorta good) doctor we know and love in Re-Animator films.

I guess one could say that at times this film doesn’t feel like a Re-Animator film. Also with it being a new era for filmmaking, some nasty CGI does make it into the mix with the natural effects. But those issues aside, it’s not an overall bad film. We see some interesting and some funny stuff from time to time. Dan (who is just mentioned but not seen) is missed overall, but West does get in stride by the film’s clever-ish end. It’s not a movie that is as good as the previous films in the franchise, but it’s not a bad film overall. You’ll be happy if you go into it looking for some funny moments and some gore. Just don’t go in expecting much else.
