C.H.U.D. II (1989) (Movie Review)

C.H.U.D. II (1989)
Director: David Irving

A couple of teenagers break into a secret government science lab and steal a frozen corpse for a high school prank and accidentally awaken the corpse which turns out to be a CHUD, ironically named Bud, who goes on a killing spree and making his victims also cannibalistic CHUD’s and its up to the teens to stop him.

I’m sad to report that as old as I am (29) I’ve never seen the original C.H.U.D. film. And I only came into possession of seeing this one when it was part of that infamous Lionsgate set. But here we are with C.H.U.D. II: Bud the Chud. And in case you didn’t already know, this is a late 80s horror comedy that doesn’t try hard at all at being serious and just settles for being very wacky with goofy characters and comedy spots. This is probably a love it or hate film, but I did find that everyone here plays their parts way better than you’d think and I did find this film way more enjoyable than I figured that I would. And if I am to be honest, I think it’s the 80s substances that this movie is overflowing with.

If you like the vibe and the corny ways of the 80s then you will love this film for its awful ways. I know that is an odd thing to say but I don’t mean it in a negative way at all. The movie has a nice soundtrack and while it isn’t loaded with gore it’s still kind of cool. There really isn’t any horror to it, just a comedy with horror elements. Bud, our main chud, develops a crush on one young lady in the film. It makes for a nice plot element but does seem like it could be made for of a focus than it is. The rest of the film is just C.H.U.D. after C.H.U.D. running rampage over a town while three teens (who are to blame for it) are trying to stop it. It isn’t for the horror purist but it makes for a good time.
