The adventures of writer Newt Scamander in New York’s secret community of witches and wizards seventy years before Harry Potter reads his book in school.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a movie that I’m sure will be more at home with big fans of the Harry Potter series and works of the author, J.K. Rowling. While I don’t think that overall this movie manages to get up to the level of most of the Harry Potter movies, I do think it is a movie that will be fun for the kids out there none the less. The movie has some fun moments in it and the fun of it overall is probably going to be the selling point. It is an effects driven tfilm and comes across very appealing on the visual front and from an effects point of view. That will be the best part of the film for everyone else. The movie looks great in HD here on Blu-ray and I’m sure that carries over to the 4K range and the 3D range as well. One issue I had with the movie was how it seemed to really take its time before getting the ball rolling on things. I can appreciate a good intro to things as much as the next guy, but this one could have used a bit of a boost at the start.
One plus to the film is that I think it is safe to say that it can stand on its own. You don’t have to be a hardcore Harry Potter fan in order to be able to enjoy what you see here and what happens here pre-dates the Potter stuff by a large number of years. You get a reference to things here and there that I’m sure Potter fans will love but seeing those movies aren’t required before viewing this one. I like Harry Potter movies but there was just something in this one that didn’t overall click for me in parts. Because of that, I can say I kind of liked the movie but I didn’t love it. I think the kids will love it, I think it will work well to test out how great your TVs look, but besides that, it was a bit of a mixed bag for anyone looking for actual plots and such as that.
