In the fine tradition of comedy caper films such as How To Steal A Million, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Gambit, comes Heartbreakers starring Sigourney Weaver (Alien) and Jennifer Love Hewitt (TV’s Party of Five) as a mother and daughter con team. Set in Palm Beach, Heartbreakers follows the escapades of Max (Weaver) and Page (Hewitt) Connors, two con artists who use beauty and brains to bilk big bucks from their perspective suitors. Page’s plan for a solo career is threatened when confronted by the IRS (in the form of Anne Bancroft, The Miracle Worker) for back taxes. So, it’s time for one last job. And what a last job it’ll be. With their sites set on tobacco tycoon William B. Tensey (Gene Hackman, The Birdcage) it looks like their problems are solved. Enter former con, Dean Cummano (Ray Liotta, Goodfellas) and potential con (and romantic interest), Jack Withrowe (Jason Lee, Almost Famous) and the stage is set for comic confusion of the highest order.
During 2002 I was graduating high school and while I was always a fan of movies, I was just then really starting to start a movie collection. I had the DVD of Heartbreakers, because of one reason, that was Jennifer Love Hewitt. This girl was on my bedroom wall, she was the only reason I watched Party of Five and looking back now, I think she was why I’m so fond of I Know What You Did Last Summer. So, because of her, I got this movie and that’s why I’m once again with the Blu-ray from Olive writing about it now. The movie is basic stuff really. It has a fun cast, Gene Hackman brings the funny as well. But this is a movie most people are probably watching just for Jennifer Love Hewitt. And we do get to see a lot of her looking hot here, so if vintage JLH in HD is your selling point, that is done well here. I mean, sure, the transfer could have been a bit better and I really wish we had gotten the commentary from the DVD release, but it is what it is and at least it does look like an improvement from the DVD, even if it might not be THAT much of an improvement in the thick of things.
The story here is your basic stuff. We have a mother and daughter team that are in the business of ripping people off. Enter in some new folks to con and enter in a reason perhaps for them to want to change their ways a bit and we all the sudden have some conflicted feelings and perhaps a reason to not do what they always do. But will they have their hearts stolen instead of the loot? Will love conquer all or will they got to the slammer? Well, you have to watch for that, but I will say that it is a harmless affair that is funny, but probably doesn’t blow everyone away overall. But I’m all for giving a watch to any movie with a mother and daughter team that brings together Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt. I’m also a fan of Jason Lee because I’m a sick person who enjoys Kevin Smith movies and he’s always been an actor I enjoy from those. So, it is a bit too bare (or feels that way without the commentary), but it looks good and the movie isn’t bad for what it is. If that sounds good to you or if you are just a JLH fan like me, then by all means have at it.
