Gregory (Clint Howard), the local ice cream man, just wants people to be nice to him and to sell the neighborhood children his ice cream treats. Unfortunately, the adults disrespect him, and the kids fear him, so, as any recently released mental patient would do, Gregory begins brutally murdering anyone who prevents him from having a happy, happy, happy day…

I’m sure Clint Howard is a nice guy, but the dude just looks creepy and that has lead to all the roles he has gotten in the world of horror and genre films. Ice Cream Man might perhaps be his crowning achievement in horror and being creepy. Heck, this might just be his signature character this side of the one he had in Evil Speak. There was a lot of really bad things about 90’s horror and this one from 1994 has just about every negative the genre had at the time. Yet somehow, perhaps in the biggest part of Howard himself, Ice Cream Man manages to be just as entertaining as it is “bad”. We watch a nutty guy with an ice cream truck mix in terrible things with his flavors, have a questionable backstory, and try to kill kids. It isn’t the type movie for everyone out there, but I can certainly see why people enjoy it as much as they seem to.

One of the biggest things making this one stand out is the gore and effects here. While it is on the far side of being silly and cartoony, this one has some cool stuff going on in it. Heads are turned into ice cream cones and a lot of other gimmicks filled mayhem. I do find the kids to be annoying and that’s a shame since they are the people trying to stop this crazy ice cream man before the grown folks get a clue, but on the very strange acting power of Clint Howard, this one pulls through. And thanks to the great work of Vinegar Syndrome this one looks amazing and get a really awesome Blu-ray release. I’m a big fan of the Monster Vision episode version of the movie on here as well. You can never get enough Joe Bob and you can never get enough of Clint Howard playing a weirdo as well.
