A madcap brain surgeon, married to a beautiful but evil woman, falls in love with the brain of another lady who has everything he wants – except a body.
I’m a big Steve Martin fan and he seems to be going all in with the comedy here in 1983’s The Man with Two Brains. Which is a movie he helped write as well as star in. The comedy in this one is almost to the level of it being on parody, which might have just been what they were going for. The main plot follows Steve’s character as a brain surgeon who gets suckered into a marriage with an evil woman who’s just after money. He ends up apparently falling in love with a brain and we have the beef of the film. Of course, that doesn’t even mention the countless over the top scenes and jokes we have along the way. The movie is just all over the place and insane, but entertaining none the less and that makes it get my approval despite how wacky it can get from time to time. For what it’s worth, as weird as the film can get, both Steve Martin and Kathleen Turner are great.
The film is channeling those midnight movies from way back in the day before the film’s release in 1983, so it does give off that midnight movie vibe. It’s a little “The Brain that Wouldn’t Die” with a little more mad scientist on top, but it tops it all off with a nice little comedic dose that COULD be too much at times for some, but I still managed to enjoy it regardless. The film looks good here like most Warner Archive releases and it certainly tops the old DVD that was out before, as I’m sure everyone expects. This is a wild one at times with the over the top comedy, but if you love Steve Martin movies you’ll be happy with what you get here because (for better or worse) he’s in rare form.
