Peter Weller (RoboCop, Sons of Anarchy) stars in Of Unknown Origin, an eerie and nerve-tingling suspense thriller directed by George P. Cosmatos (Tombstone, Cobra) and the winner of Paris International Film Festival Awards for Best Picture and Actor. Cleverly and compellingly, the film draws you into a battle of wits, namely one with an intruder that’s formidable, persistent and clever enough to lure Bart (Weller) along on an unwitting path to self-destruction. In the battle of man vs. beast, push has come to scream.

Of Unknown Origin is a bit of an odd movie to sit down and review. Is it an entertaining movie? Yeah, or at least it is entertaining enough for what it is. Why I say that is because you’d think a movie about a giant rat reeking havoc would have at least more of a body count and would be a lot more than just Peter Weller hilariously on a mission to kill said rat that is more annoying and freakishly big than anything else. My only issue with the film is it is way more dark comedy than it is anything else. I mean you could barely call this one a horror movie with the humans perhaps doing worse from time to time than the rat. Weller’s performance is very much a fun one and keeps the movie watchable, but you want more chaos from the rat.

So, this might not be the horror movie you expect about an oversized rat if you’ve never seen this one before now. The movie offers up very fun dark comedy moments, some eye-candy, and some very gimmicky characters at other times. All in all, I liked it enough but was hoping for a little more in the horror area and in a body count area than this one is willing to give. Scream Factory gives us a nice transfer here and even a few extras to go along with it. But don’t be too shocked if you walk away from this one wishing you had a little more rat and blood to go on top of it all.
