Get It Here:

Blumhouse Productions welcomes you to the movement that began as a simple experiment: The First Purge. To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.

The political side of horror keeps being a thing now and The First Purge is keeping that going. But let’s look away from the obvious marketing plan and let’s take a look at the movie that tells us of the origins of the Purge concept. And if you couldn’t already tell, this one takes place before the original movie. And if you liked the more open area nature these films have taken since the original you’ll like what you get here as this movie takes place around a whole area with the government offering up money to poor people and crazy people for the amount of Purging they do. This naturally leads to some conflict and when they don’t see enough Purging they send in some help which forces the area’s local gang leader to stand up for him home and fight back. So yes, the “hero” of this movie is actually a gang leader. But don’t worry, he’s one of those bad but not too bad types that movies like to give us every now and again.

All kidding aside, The First Purge wasn’t bad. It’s an action thriller with horror elements as most these movies have been and it manages to add a little something new to the franchise even if still at the core of things we’ve seen most of this done before in the last two Purge movies before it. The biggest difference being we’re more in the hood this time around. I know they now have a TV series going on for this stuff, but I do feel if they want to make another Purge movie they might have to change it up well past even what they did here to really keep anyone interested. This one was okay, but nothing groundbreaking.
