THE VIOLENCE MOVIE: When a deranged killer (David Wilkinson) escapes from prison, he inexplicably invades the home of Joey Hammond (Joseph Shaugnessy) who must fight for his life in order to stay alive. Shot on VHS back in 1988 (with additional footage added in 2003) by a teenage Eric D. Wilkinson (who went on to produce Jerome Bixby’s The Man From Earth, Mischief Night, Sparks), the short was passed around on bootleg VHS tapes for years before the term “viral” ever existed. Almost 30 years later, this homage to slasher movies has been re-mastered, re-edited and re-scored (from none other than the legendary Friday the 13th composer Harry Manfredini) is now available for all to enjoy!

The Violence Movie is kind of a hard one for me to review. What it boils down it, is it was a shot on video short film made by three brothers. They made two of them and the effects in them aren’t too shabby for what they are and the money they had in it. It comes to us from MVD with a really cool reversible cover, but that doesn’t hide the fact that it’s still two shorts that combine for 35 minutes and the extras aren’t that long either. I don’t know if these ever were released on VHS or anything before, but I kind of hoped they’d at least have a cool making-of in the extras, but we don’t get that either.

Both shorts have a commentary, the failed third film they tried to make is here and has a commentary as well. I guess this is a couple shorts that had some clout in the underground tape trading world back in the old days, but on its own, I guess I can respect it, but you kind of get to where you want a little more than what the movie offers up. Kudos to the directors for making what they made and for now having it on a nice looking DVD, but you might find yourself wanting a little more than what you get with this one overall. I love shot on video movies and I appreciate the gore, but I’d have liked a longer running time and some more story.
