Sawyer Valentini relocates from Boston to Pennsylvania to escape from the man who’s been stalking her for the last two years. While consulting with a therapist, Valentini unwittingly signs in for a voluntary 24-hour commitment to the Highland Creek Behavioral Center. Her stay at the facility soon gets extended when doctors and nurses begin to question her sanity. Sawyer now believes that one of the staffers is her stalker — and she’ll do whatever it takes to stay alive and fight her way out.

I think one of the most interesting and attention grabbing things about Unsane is the fact it was shot in 4K on an iPhone. That might actually be what gets a number of people to check this out. Lucky for them, the movie isn’t that bad either and actually finds ways to keep you interested in just what the heck is going on. When you break it down our lead character Sawyer had a stalker and it has messed with her. She isn’t in the same state but she still freaks out and sees him at times when he isn’t there. She ends up in the crazy house and that’s when things get even more strange. She swears this guy is working there and we have to wait and see if she’s on to something or if it’s all just in her head. Honestly, I really liked what we got here with Unsane. It isn’t a movie that tosses anything in your face. If you don’t mind waiting around and bit to see where the chips fall, then you find yourself with a nice horror thriller with some pretty tense moments. Yeah, it’s shot in 4K on an iPhone and looks good, but you tend to forget about that while watching. You almost don’t even notice that because of this style we have some black bars on the side of the screen.

While the style of the film does add to the mood and you’d probably not expect anything less than style coming from director Steven Soderbergh, lead Claire Foy is who really holds this one together. You pretty much know her character of Sawyer is a little crazy, we just have to wait and see if she’s crazy enough to have this whole film in her head. Add in some good enough side characters and we have a movie that could very well crack the year-end “best of” list. Some will try to argue it is more thriller than horror, but I think any horror fan will find more than your fill of horror and terror here to be happy. There are some very nicely done moments in this movie and we have even a slight feel of Hitchcock from time to time. If you think that sounds like something you want to see, then I don’t think you’ll be wasting your time at all give it a watch.
