Kinda like what would happen if Wes Anderson made a horror film in space.
Directed By: Chance Shirley
Anyone here ever heard of a sci-fi horror film named, Interplanetary? Well, if you have yet to hear about it, now is a good of a time as any to get really familiar with it. I can honestly say I had a massively good time while watching it and I’m sure most of you will as well. It’s hard to make a space story blend in well with horror and comedy but this movie gets it right for the most part. I was shocked by now entertained I was but that just goes to show some of the better films you can see are a lot of the times the ones you’ve never heard of before.
Nine men and women, employees of Interplanetary Corporation, live and work on Mars. Their days aren’t particularly interesting, much less exciting. Until they are assaulted by a murderous band of strangers and seemingly unstoppable alien creature. Do these attacks have anything to do with the Martian fossil recently uncovered by one of the employees? Will the rapidly increasing body count adversely affect interplanetary’s stock prices? And can anyone survive long enough to fill out the inevitable paperwork?.. The tone of this plot summary should be all you need to figure out the tone of this movie.
I wasn’t sure of what I was getting myself into when I popped in Interplanetary, but I was happy with what I got as the result. What you have here is a movie that seems to have humor that’s a little on the dry side. It’s funny and it doesn’t just think it’s funny, it’s literally funny. It doesn’t take it’s self too seriously and it’s soaked in blood and some really awesome gore effects, Anyone who likes aliens and gore will feel as if they are in Heaven once they see this thing. And above all else, it has some re-watch value. A value that is very hard to find with films these days. This movie won’t be for everyone, but people who like it will probably love it.
If you’ve ever been a fan of any Wes Anderson film, I think you’ll be a big fan of Chance Shirley’s work here. It’s a dry-ish humor. It’s funny based off just the delivery of how people say stuff, even more so than what they say. But to top it all off, while it’s no fast moving story, it’s a story that is very much interesting and holds your attention from the start of the film til it’s abrupt end. And to top things off, I think we have one of the most bad ass and coolest looking aliens that I’ve seen in a movie in years! And to see the damage that aliens does and how to rips people apart is truly a sight to see.
If you are looking for something that is just good gore soaked fun, then this movie is for you. It’s got some fun moments, some bloody scenes, and some running gags that are actually hilarious (if I do say so myself). I’d dare say it’s one the better space themed sci-fi or horror films I have seen in a long looooong time. If you dig that sorta stuff, I am more than confident you will also dig this, a lot. If you take a chance on one film this year then it might as well be Interplanetary. I think you will all be happy with the results.
