I really really like the gore here..
Directed By: Dan Donley
I hadn’t heard a whole lot about the movie Shellter before heading into watching it. I had heard however of Shriek Feast, and this film for what it’s worth was a selection into that. It had also won a few awards at other film fests but that doesn’t always equal quality. I’m happy to say after watching Shellter for myself that I think it’s justifiable in it’s award winnings. To find something that’s solid in the horror genre can at times be a very hard thing to do, but I think this movie does just fine for what it is, and actually remains very watchable for it’s run-time..something that most films can’t pull off these days.
So as the world goes to hell above her,Zoey awakens underground at a medical facility with just a doctor, his seemingly crazy nurse, and a few stray survivors here and there. Soon the already bleak situation gets even bleaker, as the doctor wants Zoey to help him due some pretty questionable things to others and if she doesn’t want to help then they may just be done to her. As the movie goes along it brings up the question of just what would you do? It also brings up a few other questions but with the gore here I think most of them can be forgiven.
So this film is a bit of an odd one to say the least. We’ve seen a zillion dooms day films before, but I’ll admit this one does have an odd charm to it at times. It doesn’t really ever hold a punch and it does push reason and morals around from time to time as the things rolls along. But if you asked me to pick one highlight of the film it would be hands down the gore. You get none of that CGI stuff, so you get plenty of red corn syrup flying around pretty often. That alone makes for a very enjoyable overall film in my book. They just don’t seem to make them like that anymore so it’s refreshing to see it here.
Also I’ll give a big thumbs up to the acting as well. It’s a small-ish cast, but everyone does their job very well. especially the crazy doctor and his unwilling new nurse. If you watch the special features on the DVD you can see everyone had a lot of fun during the making of this very serious film. That added with just what takes place in this film shows just how good the actors were as they have their serious faces on and you would never be able to tell that just before someone yelled action they were probably laughing and having a good time. Not that this doesn’t happen on most movie sets, I’m just really impressed how the acting turned out overall. I wouldn’t be shocked to one day see these folks in some bigger films down the road.
Now of course without spoiling anything I must say the film starts one place and by the time it wraps it seems to have gone in a whole other direction, and it KINDA works in some ways and in other it kinda doesn’t. Now this doesn’t ruin the film by any means, but it brings forth a few questions one can’t talk about openly in a review without dipping into spoilers. But I will say this, there’s a chance this that I’m talking about could make or break the film for you at the end of the day. Still, I’d say Shellter is a movie very much worth checking out. You get good acting and you get good gore. The story at times gets a little awkward, but I’d say it’s nowhere near horrible either.
If you’d like to check this film out, then by all means click on over to the official web-site for it and give it a go, I don’t think many of you will be disappointed at all in what you find. it’s well worth the watch in my book and I think you might find it very enjoyable overall to. Sure, things get a little “out there” at the end, but what can you do huh?
