Picking the best between this and part 3 is like asking if you want shot or stabbed.
Initiation: Silent Night, Deadly Night 4 (1990)
Directed By: Brian Yuzna (Return of the Living Dead III)
Like most horror franchises Silent Night, Deadly Night started rolling out a pretty constant amount of sequels and like a lot of other franchises the steam started to run out pretty soon..Maybe even faster with it than with others.
The first one was good, the second one would have been better had it been more of a movie and less flashbacks, the third was pretty horrible, so I wasn’t looking for much with part 4. And rightfully so, you see this time around they dropped the whole killer Santa deal all together and started dealing with a cult, but it just so happens it all takes place on Christmas so I guess they figured they could toss the already known name on it and run off to the bank..if only it were that easy right?
So as I said above here there isn’t a killer Santa this time around, there’s just a story of a reporter named Kim who is investigating a story of a woman who jumped off a building and burned to death and of course this leads her to a cult of witches! Feel the excitement??..Yeah me neither.
Really the only connection between this movie and the past three is the fact it’s Christmas but there’s also a character named Ricky (played by Clint Howard) and I’ll be honest folks I have no clue if this is supposed to be the same Ricky as before or not. So if anyone here has that info then by all means help a brotha out! If it IS him it makes no sense what so ever because for one where is his brain cap from part 3??
I just really didn’t find much of anything in this movie likable besides some of the effects. A woman passing a bug out her mouth and giving birth to herself is cool and all but not for Silent Night, Deadly Night. If you didn’t know better you’d have swore you’ve walked into a unknown sequel to Rosemary’s Baby or Xtro and in this case with a horror movie that takes place around Christmas it’s not a good thing.
You may notice the leading lady Kim (played by Neith Hunter) from her stints on Redshoe Diaries if anyone remembers what that is..Needless to say she gets naked a lot, I suppose that’s what they were trying to mix with the effects to put this movie over with the viewers because everything else is a confusing mess. Sadly, it’s about an hour and a half of my life I’m never going to get back.
If a movie can be released in the UK as Bugs omitting the whole Silent Night, Deadly Night name all together that should tell you what you’re dealing with here. Sure some of the effects are cool but that’s about it because it doesn’t add up to make a lick of sense even when dealing with witches.
Still it was slightly better than part 3 but as I’m sure you all know by now, that’s not saying much at all.
