Can you guys remember back in the day when collecting baseball cards was fun and cool all rolled into one? I’d head off the local store and/or gas station and right there on the counter was usually a box of Topps baseball cards! Believe it or not packs of cards were just 50 cents, not the 2 to 3 bucks like they started selling for in the late 90’s to today.
But today isn’t about just baseball cards, you see there was an isle in the same store right next to the candy that had several boxes of cards. Cards from all sorts of different things from Wrestling to Horror Movies! I loved these cards and bought a lot of them back in the day and thus I have fond memories of a series of cards called Topps Fright Flicks
Topps Fright Flicks was a card set released in 1985. (I had these hanging around in some form or another as I got older) The set contained 90 cards and 11 stickers, and each pack had 9 cards, 1 sticker, and 1 stick of gum that I liked even more than the cards back in the day. I’ve been told they are a lot like the ‘Shock Theatre’ set from the 1970’s but clearly I’m not that old to know about those.
The cards showed a picture from a horror movie with a corny joke caption at the bottom of the card. The movies featured in the set were none other than Alien, Aliens, Ghostbusters, Nightmare on Elm Street 1, 2 and 3, Fright Night, Day Of The Dead, Vengeance: The Demon, The Fly, Poltergeist 1 and 2, Predator, An American Werewolf In London and Pumpkin Head
On the back of the cards show a short piece of text titled ‘Did It Ever Happen?’ – Strange, mysterious and spooky so called true stories.
The stickers reverse made a jigsaw. As with most Topps cards of the time.
Sadly I don’t have any of these today but it sure makes me want to hit up eBay looking for them.
