In “A Star Is Born,” Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga fuse their considerable talents to depict the raw and passionate tale of Jack and Ally, two artistic souls coming together, on stage and in life. Theirs is a complex journey through the beauty and heartbreak of a relationship struggling to survive. In this new take on the iconic love story, four-time Oscar nominee Cooper (“American Sniper,” “American Hustle,” “Silver Linings Playbook”) makes his directorial debut, and also stars alongside multiple award-winning, Oscar-nominated music superstar Gaga in her first leading role in a major motion picture. Cooper portrays seasoned musician Jackson Maine, who discovers and falls in love with struggling artist Ally. She has given up on her dream to become a successful singer until she meets Jack, who immediately sees her natural talent.
A Star is Born is a movie that we’ve seen made several times. Still, every now and then we see the story remade again with a modern twist and that brings us to this version starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. While I like most versions, I have to admit that this one could very well with my favorite with the mix of actors and the mix of music. Cooper and Gaga play very well off one another and it only helps. This story of what turns out to be a bit of a rise and a fall with music tossed in the mix is one that can hit on many emotions while watching, but it also the type of movie you can watch again and again as it packs lots of re-watch value and will probably go down as a classic in the years to come.
I’ve seen Lady Gaga in a number of movies and I’m a fan overall, but I do believe she turns in her best performance here and plays her role to perfection. Cooper does just as good, but I think we might be more expecting to that. Perhaps even more impressive with him is the fact he directed it. Music plays a BIG role in this thing and the music works. It’s a modern take and it isn’t at all retro, but still with having a soundtrack as solid as this one does it sort of reminds me of those movies that came out in the 80s with great music behind them. This 4K release is just what a movie like this needs and it looks great and sounds great. There’s a lot of hype behind this one and I think you should believe it. If you’ve not watched A Star is Born yet, then, by all means, you need to seek it out now.
