At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings.
Fantastic Beasts the Crimes of Grindelwald is a movie that is one that everyone who enjoys Harry Potter looked forward to but now that it’s out I’m not sure all of that same excitement remains. First off the plot is a very all over the place plot. Like, I feel the movie packs a lot of filler with just the basics being the bad guy wants to get the good guy but they are more good guys trying to get him, so now he also wants to get everyone. Mix that in with a whole heck of a lot of Harry Potter Easter Eggs and that basically makes up the movie as a whole. The movie looks good, the movie sounds good, and it has a lot of cool effects in it but I can’t help but feel its a situation where we have lots of styles but not much substance. Or in this case, not a whole heck of a lot of coherent plot. That means lots of shiny bells and whistles but very little steak to go along with the big ol’ sizzle the movie is letting off.
But on the other end of all of that, I do want to give props to Johnny Depp for his role as the movie’s bad guy, Grindelwald. I feel like he caught a lot of heat from the public for personal reasons before this movie even came out but as is usually the case with Depp, he does a fine job. I’ll put it this way when you find whatever you find wrong with this movie (and you will probably find a lot) it won’t be with Johnny Depp. It’s clearly the story here that holds this down. On the other hand, this one seems like it is building to a better story later on, so maybe down the road when all is said and done we’ll remember this one as a bridge to a better tale than the rather flat note it seems to be set on now. But if you do pick this one you’ll notice it does look amazing in 4K and packs some cool extras, but the movie doesn’t really match up to the first film or the other Potter movies.
