When members of a dance troupe are lured to an empty school, drug-laced sangria causes their jubilant rehearsal to descend into a dark and explosive nightmare as they try to survive the night — and find out who’s responsible — before it’s too late.
You should probably know ahead of time that Gaspar Noé’s Climax is a very strange and weird movie and as a result, this isn’t a movie that will appeal to the broad area of the average moviegoer out there. Then again, if you didn’t know already, Gaspar Noé has never made a “normal” film. Every movie he’s ever done had some weird hook to it and that isn’t any different with this one. Here was a movie that was shot quickly with basically a five-page script and people improvising dialogue. There’s a story here to be told, but a good deal of it seems to be told in elaborate dance numbers that are shot with a very neat style. The movie is already a bit different before we even head into the darker areas of it. The style makes it stand-out easily, but the darker portion that soon follows it what will ultimately make Climax memorable.
You see apparently all of these people who are happy and dancing gets drugged and once that happens all hell breaks loose and things get very violent and strange. Everyone starts acting out and a whole lot of dark emotions and twisted antics come out of it. There’s already a bit of dirty laundry there but it gets upped to the millionth degree once what happens to these folks happens and that is where the movie becomes just as much of a horror film in a lot of ways than it is anything else. Gaspar Noé hasn’t had many misses in his movie-making career and this one makes up for what I felt was a misstep in his movie Love. This is more my style of Gaspar Noé and I think if you like his older films you will like this. But if you aren’t into trippy stuff with dance numbers then you might not find what you are looking for here.
