Members of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species-thought to be mere myths-rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

I’m a big fan of Godzilla! One of the biggest I think you’ll find out here reviewing movies on the internet. And while I do think Godzilla: King of the Monsters is a solid enough movie and one long-time fan of the series and giant monster movies will enjoy, it isn’t perfect. As you can probably assume, the monster fights in this one were done right. The movie is at it’s best when Godzilla, Morthra, King Ghidorah, and the rest of the crew are on the screen and wrecking stuff, including but not limited to one another. The human side and the plot of this one is the only real negative side to the whole thing. Whereas older Godzilla movies tend to get this side of the coin wrong by being dull, King of the Monsters makes a mistake by having too awkward of a movie plot. There are people that seem good, then bad, but then not too bad, and it can just get a bit complex when all you really wanted here was to see Godzilla hold his throne by doing battle with every monster you can find as we still build up to Godzilla vs King Kong next year.

But the movie is still fun and doesn’t hold back on the monster battles. The effects are good and are probably prime examples of how CGI these days can be used for the greater good in movies, as we see some top of the line CGI stuff here. The movie is also visually on par with the best. It has several scenes featuring the giant monsters that stick out and are made with the stuff that iconic visuals are made of. These are when the movie is at its peak. I hope next time we can get the human and their plot stuff more in line with the quality of the monsters here. You’ll still have a great time watching Godzilla do battle here, but you shouldn’t feel too surprised if the actual people portions of the movie confuse you or even bore you a bit.
