When ace private eye Harry Goodman goes missing, his 21-year-old son Tim is prompted to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Pokémon and Harry’s former partner: Detective Pikachu. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces to unravel the tangled mystery.

I’ll admit that heading into this movie that I wasn’t much of a Pokémon fan. I’ve seen the cards and I knew people that are crazy about the whole thing, but outside of knowing a few Pokémon names, I wasn’t sure of a lot of it. But I am a fan of Ryan Reynolds and that’s what got me to watch this. Our lead’s father dies and this leads him as well as Pikachu (who can now talk) on a mission to find out what is really going on. Along the way we run into a lot of other Pokémon, we have some laughs, and we even have some stuff tug on our heartstrings as we really have what amounts to a heartwarming story here in Pokémon: Detective Pikachu. It’s fun for the whole family and it isn’t just fluff, it packs stuff that everyone can watch and enjoy, even if you aren’t the world’s biggest Pokémon fan.

From a technical standpoint, this movie looks amazing! The CGI here shows how far movies have come in the terms of computer made stuff. It also is a very strong 4K that does a whole lot for the format. And from a movie side of things, this is as solid as they come and leaves a lot of room to go on with more movies and maybe even have other past Pokémon favorites like Ash in them (Bet you didn’t think I’d know about that character huh?). If you are an adult I’m sure you’ll enjoy this movie. If you are a kid I’m sure you’ll love this movie. It’s a movie that is made for Pokémon fans but it doesn’t make that appeal exclusive and that’s a very good thing.
