Set during China’s Three Kingdom’s era (AD 220-280). The story of a great king and his people, who will be expelled from their homeland and will aspire to claim it. The king, violent and ambitious, of mysterious methods and motives; his general, a visionary who yearns to win the final battle but needs to prepare his plans in secret; the women of the palace, who struggle to find redemption in a world where they have no place; and a commoner called “Lord of all the world”, will be the characters around who turn the inexorable forces of this story.

Coming from the director of Hero and House of the Flying Daggers, I went into Shadow with some high expectations and I’m happy to say all of those expectations were met and then some. You basically have a story of a guy who looks like someone else and he’s trained to basically be that person’s shadow and take the heat if anything is every brought upon him. This sets the stage for some of the craziest and most visually awesome fight sequences that I have ever seen. I’m not sure it tops Hero for me on personal Yimou Zhang favorites, but Shadow is a close second. And after you see this for yourself and see what awesome visuals and sequences of action this one tosses at you, I’m sure you’ll be a fan of it as well. People have said that this one is like nothing they had seen before and I can see why and in a lot of ways I whole heartily agree.

Not only can you get this on Blu-ray from Well Go USA, but you can also get this on 4K and I can see why. This is a very sharp and beautiful looking film. And that’s coming from a guy who has only seen it in HD and not 4K. The colors of this one really match the mood, as you can see that the director put just as much time into this one as he did the action and the story. That all adds up to a good movie and a great viewing experience. One that doesn’t come along every day. If you were a fan of Hero or even to a lesser extent Hosue of the Flying Daggers, then you’ll be more than satisfied with Shadow.
