Blu-ray Special Edition! The Toys That Made Us is an American television series created by Brian Volk-Weiss. The first four episodes of the series began streaming on Netflix on December 22, 2017, and the next four were released on May 25, 2018. The 8-episode documentary series, as it was originally touted, focused on the history of important toy lines. The first four episodes focus on the Star Wars, He-Man and G.I. Joe toy lines with subsequent episodes featuring LEGO, Transformers, Hello Kitty, and Star Trek. For some people, the favorite memories from their childhoods are playing with toys, some of which become iconic through the years as multiple generations of people play with the venerable playthings. This series takes a look at some of America’s greatest toy franchises, including the people and companies that created them, telling the stories of the rise — and, sometimes, fall — of the billion-dollar creations. Some of the featured toys are original creations, such as Barbie, while others are based on pop-culture franchises, including the “Star Wars” line.
At my age, I hate to admit it, but I still collect some lines of action figures and after watching a show like The Toys That Made Us a lot of people will probably turn into toy collectors again. This show focuses on some of the most popular toylines that have ever been out here and all eight episodes that make up the first two seasons are on here in this two-disc DVD release. Growing up I had most the Masters of the Universe action figures. I had most the first few lines and I even had Castle Greyskull and Eternia. The kid in me loved going back and see how those toys came to be and then ultimately the rise and fall of heir popularity. It’s the same for G.I. Joe. That’s another line of toys I used to buy all the time and still love. Not only is this show a dive back into time and nostalgia, but it gives you all the history you’d want to know on some of the most popular toys that have ever been made. I love these two seasons and I can’t wait until the third season hits Netflix soon because they will be diving into even more great lines.
So basically with the first two seasons, you have an all-star selection of some classic lines. Season one has Star Wars, He-Man, Barbie, and G.I. Joe. Then season two has Star Trek, Transformers (another line I used to love), Lego, and Hello Kitty. So we’re busting into multiple decades and times on the toys that are being talked about. This release even comes with a couple of extras like even more footage from the season two Star Trek episode and a feature with the show’s creator Brian Volk-Weiss. The only downside I see to these episodes is that they make you want to go back and recollect your childhood and spend way too much money. It would have been nice to see this show on Blu-ray, but thankfully we’re getting on a disc in general since it is a Netflix show. If you love toys in general regardless of your age, you should really love what you get here. If you owned the previous DVD release, not only do you get a Blu-ray upgrade here that naturally looks better, but you also get a disc full of extras and a collectible mini toy TV!
