Aïlo: an odyssey in Lapland tells the fight for the survival of a small wild reindeer, frail and vulnerable to the challenges that punctuate his first year. Its awakening to the wild world is a real tale in the heart of the grandiose landscapes of Lapland.

More documentary than a movie and narrated in this American version here by Donald Sutherland, A Reindeer’s Journey follows a reindeer named Aïlo and we basically see how one of his kind is born and what they then do after. Of course, this comes with some great shots other animals that I’m sure the women and children will love to get a look at and other things that would have made this a great HD release, but here it is in DVD and the impact of just how awesome the setting is gets a little bit lost in the shuffle. You still get the point and it is cool following this little guy on its journey from being born on-ward as they add in little things here and there to try to make it a more satisfying viewing experience.

This is one that will most be there for the kids and people just looking for informative viewing or perhaps if they just want to watch something “cute”. This is a one and done viewing for me but I don’t fail to see where some could get some real enjoyment out of it for the more educational side of it and such. That’s what my rating for it will be based on mostly, but if you come into this thing looking for a more traditional movie than you might have found yourself watching the wrong movie.
