Annabelle Comes Home (2019) (BLU-RAY/DVD REVIEW)
DIRECTED BY: Gary Dauberman
STARRING: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Mckenna Grace

Determined to keep Annabelle from wreaking more havoc, demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren bring the possessed doll to the locked artifacts room in their home, placing her “safely” behind sacred glass and enlisting a priest’s holy blessing. But an unholy night of horror awaits as Annabelle awakens the evil spirits in the room, who all set their sights on a new target—the Warrens’ ten year- old daughter, Judy, and her friends.

Annabelle has been the weakest of the movies in the Conjuring universe. Annabelle Comes Home uses the Warrens a lot more in order to try to improve upon the story overall but still there is just something about Annabelle that makes it harder for movies involving this doll to get out of second gear and gets where it needs to be in order to be seen as being as good as The Conjuring or even other Conjuring Universe movies. I know it all amounts to just another in a long line of movies fueled by jump scares, but this comes from a place of high quality but never seems to manage to get to that level on its own despite how many other liked characters you tossed into the mix.

You still manage to get some spooky moments. You still manage to get a jump scene or two that can really get you. But when you step aside from the bells and whistles you are just left with a spooky doll that has very little in the way of good substance around it. I wasn’t really a fan of the first two but this one doesn’t manage to top the last one despite a very hard attempt at doing so. If you like ghost movies with some money put into them you might find this one worthy of a watch but if you are looking for a real improvement in the other Annabelle movies I’m sad to say you don’t really find that here.
