Automation (2019) (BLU-RAY REVIEW)
DIRECTED BY: Garo Setian
Starring: Elissa Dowling, Sadie Katz, Parry Shen

A workplace robot, AUTO, transforms into a killing machine when he discovers he will be replaced by a more efficient model. AUTO fears being terminated and will stop at nothing to prevent his own destruction. The human employees must band together to stop him before it’s too late.

Automation is what I’d call a quality indie flick. It has a comedic tone to it and it builds up to the big moment. That moment being when this robot we are seeing on screen will finally snap and go crazy. Which, of course, he does! It’s just the build-up to the cause of what happens and what happens next that keeps you going. That and the comedic nature of all of it. The robot is working at the ol’ workplace but it also seems to be having some strange war flashbacks. In the meantime, it seems to be developing feelings for one of the female employees all the while some of the other characters in the workplace are trying to pick on “him”. You see a lot of familiar faces from indie horror here, so you can bet the acting side of it is top-notch, but the plot isn’t bad either.

If I had one real complaint about this one it would be that when this robot goes on a roaring rampage of revenge, I feel it needed to be a bit more violent. We get kills and we do get some blood, but I just wish we had even more gore and blood to go along with it. We do get a few cool kills and that helps push it over to the solid and good side of things. It’s a creative movie that uses a lot of a little. We’ve seen the killer robot thing done before, but for some reason, it feels fresher this time around and it has a nice little atmosphere to it.
