Kate Kane, armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.

With Batman missing it’s up to Kate Kane to take over the role, going as Batwoman, to save Gotham from all the evils of the city! Playing that role is Ruby Rose from Orange Is the New Black fame and I think she did a fine job, which makes it kind of suck that she won’t be back for season 2. Anyway, let’s talk about season one here on Blu-ray. While you do get some action and some nice easter eggs along the way with the show, the action does seem to take a backseat to the drama of it all from time to time and that might hurt the show ever so slightly with the season. I will say that while I think Batwoman was a perfectly watchable show, I don’t know if the transition from a guest character on other shows to having her own show was as smooth as some could have hoped and it does take a few episodes for her to truly find her footing and the story to truly get rolling, but by the season’s end, I think Batwoman was doing a good job of making her own mark in the DC Multiverse.

I think as the plot gets better along the way it is very fitting to see Kate Kane grow into her new role as the protector of Gotham and it is always easy for her and that’s nice to see a hero have to sort of earn the role or at least get better with it as it moves along. Add in the none Batgirl drama the character has to deal with and we have a show that does just enough to win you over, especially if you are a Batman fan anyway like I am. One of the cool things about this Blu-ray release is that it comes with a bonus disc and on that disc, you will find Crisis on Infinity Earth and makes this release of season one a must-own for all fans of DC.
