When a routine traffic stop results in the unexplained, grisly death of her colleague, a cop (Mary J. Blige) realizes footage of the incident will play for her eyes only. As the attacks mount, she races to understand the supernatural force behind them.

I’m not sure why Paramount is releasing a DVD only of the movie Body Cam, but for those of you holding off on buying it for that reason alone, there are two things you might want to know up-front. One is that the digital code for the movie is indeed HD and that the movie isn’t what you might think it is just by looking at the cover. Yes, this is a cop movie but it’s a supernatural and oftentimes violent horror movie that just so happens to deal with cops. Coming at a time when this sort of stuff is in the news all the time, the subject matter of Body Cam is a bit raw and hits a nerve in some spots but it also shocks you by having a bit of a twist as well as having more blood than you would have expected going into it. I never thought I’d say that about a movie like this with R & B star Mary J. Blige in the lead in 2020 but we’ve seen stranger stuff this year.

That being said I’d sign off on Body Cam is one of the better horror movies of the year so far. Police brutality and crooked ways are at the forefront as an evil entity is running around and doing very violent things to cops that get in its way. Of course, all of this will come full circle and make the most sense at the end, but you have a heck of a time getting to that end and despite a few minor slow spots, this one keeps you guessing and keeps you very interested in the outcome of how things will go when all is said and done. I don’t know if the cover will do anyone any favors if you’ve not seen the trailer, but Body Cam isn’t what you think it is based on that. It is actually a much better horror movie than most anyone could expect.
