Creed II (2018) (BLU-RAY/DVD REVIEW)
DIRECTED BY: Steven Caple Jr.
STARRING: Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, Tessa Thompson, Dolph Lundgren

Life has become a balancing act for Adonis Creed. Between personal obligations and training for his next big fight, he is up against the challenge of his life. Facing an opponent with ties to his family’s past only intensifies his impending battle in the ring. Rocky Balboa is there by his side through it all and, together, Rocky and Adonis will confront their shared legacy, question what’s worth fighting for, and discover that nothing’s more important than family. “Creed II” is about going back to basics to rediscover what made you a champion in the first place, and remembering that, no matter where you go, you can’t escape your history.

Rocky 4 is easily my favorite Rocky movie and if I were going to make a list of my all-time favorite movies I would probably have it on there. That reason alone made me really want to check out Creed II. I was a fan of the first film, but this one gives us what we really want if you love Rocky 4 as I do. Here we have the son of Apollo Creed face to face with the fan who killed his father and now he has his own son set to do battle with young Adonis Johnson. This alone is enough to make you interested, but the movie does a lot right to hit all the proper emotions right down to bring back Dolph Lundgren to once again play that iconic role of Drago. The movie hits all the action notes you’d want it to, but then it also hits the emotional notes and makes it a movie that rises above the popcorn flick level. Let’s be honest, most Rocky movies including the very 80s and very awesome Rocky 4 are just bells and whistle films at heart. But the original Rocky movies, as well as Creed and now Creed II is actually full of heart and tell very important stories.

I was ready to hand Sylvester Stallone an Oscar after Creed and here again, I wish the man would win all the awards possible. While I do love Rambo and all the mindless violence that come with those movies, I think the character of Rocky Balboa might be Sly’s overall best character and work. That being said we can’t forget Michael B. Jordan who keeps doing nothing but impress people in this role. Look, if you guys want the boxing action and stuff this whole franchise was built on you can be happy knowing you find that here. But you should also take comfort in knowing how well made these movies actually are and Creed II delivers in more ways as one and is what you all had hoped for in a sequel to Creed. This is what Rocky fans want and it adds more dimensions and closer to people who love all the characters from the series, especially Rocky 4.
