Paula Carson’s (Jill Schoelen, POPCORN) high school experience couldn’t be better. Between being class president and dating her school’s star basketball player, Dwight (Brad Pitt, SE7EN), she seems to have everything she could ask for. But when mentally disturbed teenage murderer Brian Wood (Donovan Leitch, THE BLOB) is released from an area asylum and rejoins his old classmates, it’s not long before students and teachers alike turn up missing, or are found murdered. While Dwight becomes convinced that Brian’s gone back to his violent ways, Paula can’t help but suspect that someone might be trying to set Brian up to carry out their own twisted plan…

There’s an odd sense of humor to be found in the 1988 slasher, Cutting Class. A movie that also just so happens to be Brad Pitts first leading role. Here Brad is playing Dwight and his old best friend is back from the crazy house and trying to take his woman. On top of that people are ending up dead. So as things go along we have to try to decide if Dwight himself is crazy and doing it, is it his friend who’s back from the nut house still keeping it up, or perhaps a curveball and the weird janitor or something. As you watch you’ll be keeping your eye on the two main male leads but there is just enough to keep you always second guessing. That’s probably the best part of Cutting Class. Other than that we have a pretty by the book slasher that at least takes the chance to have some fun with things here and there. I will, however, admit that some of the comedy is a bit awkward and out of place at times as we mix in the comedy with the more serious moments.

Vinegar Syndrome does bring this deep cut in the slasher genre to us in an uncut form for the first time. They also have included some commentary tracks and some interviews. We also have a comparison to the R-rated version just in case you haven’t seen that and want a good comparison. The truth is not all slasher movies can be Halloween, but Vinegar Syndrome treats Cutting Class as if it were in the same class with a release like we have here. If you want to see Brad Pitt before he was a star or just see a slasher that you’ve perhaps missed, that is where Cutting Class is best used. But it’s a very nice release for it regardless.
