Still irrevocably scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance (Ewan McGregor) has fought to find some semblance of peace. But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra (Kyliegh Curran), a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the “shine.” Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson) and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality. Forming an unlikely alliance, Dan and Abra engage in a brutal life-or-death battle with Rose. Abra’s innocence and fearless embrace of her shine compel Dan to call upon his own powers as never before—at once facing his fears and reawakening the ghosts of the past.

We return to the Overlook Hotel for Doctor Sleep, a sequel to The Shining that follows Danny as he’s now grown. Danny has had a rough life since the events of The Shining but now he’s trying to get his stuff back together as he comes across a teenage girl who has super shining powers and as a result is being stalked by a cult that likes to kill people with the power and take it from them. They aren’t above killing kids either as the movie soon shows us. The movie comes in at a massive two and a half hours and that could be my only real complaint about it. I feel it is a bit long in the tooth, but besides all of that, it packs a solid story with a very good cast and solid storytelling. It comes from director Mike Flanagan so you know it will be well directed with an eerie tone throughout. If you like Mike’s other movies I think you’ll like this. Being familiar with the source is just a bonus heading into it.

And the movie does do more than one call back to Kubrick’s The Shining. It can mix with either that or just the book in a number of ways. The movie recasts the old roles for the flashbacks but I don’t think it hurts as it makes things all the weirder in a way. And that is a way I wouldn’t call bad. Running time notwithstanding, this is a solid movie that is creepy and gives us some very tense moments at times. It even tosses a little bit of blood at us as well. Ewan McGregor plays the grown Danny in this one and it shows just how solid of an actor he has always been. In a way, this movie helps be a reminder of that as well as just an overall solid horror thriller.
