Six strangers are given mysterious black boxes with tickets to an immersive escape room for a chance to win tons of money. Being locked in several rooms with extreme conditions, they discover the secrets behind the escape room and must fight to survive and to find a way out.

I had been told heading into Escape Room that I should be worried because it was a bad movie. Now having watched it for myself I have no idea what they were talking about because I think Escape Room was a whole heck of a lot of fun. Is it a perfect movie? No, but it doesn’t have to be. What I saw was something that clearly has a path to being a new horror franchise and I welcome it. We should, however, take into account that I’ve been in an escape room before (I escaped for the record) and I kind of get what they are going for with the movie. They used the basics of the experience and turned it up a notch with it becoming a game of life or death. The movie takes some folks and seems to know every little thing about them. It tosses them into the game and we have to figure out what kind of people we are dealing with as they figure out their ways out of each room. The movie even plays around a little with the audience making it not as predictable as one might think. Is it a little far fetched in spots? Yes, but I will let it slide because I appreciate the effort to make it at least different.

The movie feels a little like SAW in some ways, but not totally, so if you are all SAW-ed out still you don’t need to run away at the mention of it. Also, the rating of it ensures us that things never do really get all that gruesome, which the lack of blood and gore in it might actually be my one and only true complaint about it. In a genre where we have a horror movie for basically everything from holidays to all occasions, I think it’s only right we get one for the very popular escape rooms of the world. This one is already getting a sequel and it lays the work out perfect for it here. I can see that just being the start of the sequels. So if this really does end up being the one that kicks starts all of that off, I think we are easily off to a better than expected start for Escape Room.
