Excess Baggage (1997) (BLU-RAY REVIEW)
DIRECTED BY: Marco Brambilla
STARRING: Alicia Silverstone, Benicio del Toro, Christopher Walken
AVAILABLE FROM Mill Creek Entertainment

A spoiled young woman, desperate for attention from her millionaire father (Jack Thompson), Emily Hope (Alicia Silverstone) fakes her own abduction to shift his focus her way. The so-called kidnapping turns real, however, when auto thief Vincent Roche (Benicio Del Toro) makes off with a car and discovers Emily, who had locked herself inside the trunk. As Vincent tries to figure out what to do with his unexpected guest, Emily begins to fall for the charming felon.

I kinda dig this one right here. Here we have Alicia Silverstone when she was on top of her game and she’s playing a character here that I think is a very interesting one. Especially interesting when you mix her in with the dynamic that is Benicio Del Toro’s character. This was a movie I used to watch on cable back in the day but when you really sit down and watch it today you notice more about how well acted and rounded the movie is. The movie pretty much packs an all-star cast and dives over into almost slapstick comedy at times. It just boils down to being a fun movie with a bunch of fun moments. But it also makes you care about your leading characters and that is something that is never easy to do. It also never hurts to have Christopher Walken in your film and he’s here as well! So from a plot standpoint, this movie is creative and you are never too sure how things are going to go. That helps a lot coming from a time when plots were predictable.

The release here from Mill Creek Entertainment comes with that cool VHS style slipcover but doesn’t have an extra to be found on the disc. Also, for some reason, this transfer seems extremely soft. Like we’re just looking at a DVD upconvert and that’s something you just don’t see very often these days in a time when people are all about the transfers and getting bigger and better TVs. So, that’s off here when it comes to this one. So, no, the looks of the movie won’t be popping off your screen sadly. But you do have a good movie on your hands here and that might be just when mixed with the cool slipcase for most. I think because the movie is as solid as it is I can look over the other stuff just a bit.
