Adam Rockoff’s Going to Pieces: The Rise and Fall of the Slasher Film might be one of the most essential and famous books of the horror genre. After all, this is a book that spawned the live-action documentary of the same name. At least here in book form, we have way fewer spoilers for slasher movies than the movie had (But we do have spoilers so be careful). What separates this book from others is the way that Rockoff dives into the subject with an almost professor style. He talks about lots of things and he also shares interviews and other fun tidbits along the way. This is a book that will paint the numbers of telling you exactly what a slasher is, why it is, and what came because of how big they became. It also covers the low points and when they dropped off as well. It isn’t all boobs, blood, and sunshine in this book. It deep dives into the muck of slasher movies as well.

One of the best things I find about this book is it doesn’t just cover Halloween, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. This is a book that gives crappy slashers time to shine as well. I like seeing movies like that get some sections on them and I also like that if you are just now getting into the genre that you could use something like that to maybe even find other slasher movies that you might not have even knew about. Yes, we know they have slashers for basically every holiday you can think of, but with the help of this book, you can find info on some of the most obscure titles out there.

Into its reprint edition, McFarland & Company’s release of Going to Pieces: The Rise and Fall of the Slasher Film, 1978-1986 comes in at 223 pages and is one of the most talked-about books of the horror genre and with good reason. If you love slasher movies you will want to own this.
