Joker (2019) (BLU-RAY/DVD REVIEW)
DIRECTED BY: Todd Phillips
Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Robert De Niro

Director Todd Phillips’ “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Joker works as a movie because it doesn’t feel like a comic book movie most the time. Now I personally love comic book movies. I love most of them. But I know a lot of people aren’t into that and this is a movie that plays to those who love just good movies in general and movies such as some of Martin Scorsese best. This plays a lot like a Martin Scorsese movie and I’m sure that was the intent as it was originally a movie being made with hopes that Martin Scorsese would direct. We follow the Joker to be a leading character as he deals with several things including taking care of his unwell mother, bullying, and mental illness. This one even tosses at us a pretty interesting plot with Thomas Wayne that opens up a whole other element to this thing. This movie makes you think a lot. And after you see it you’ll know exactly what I mean.

There is also a good bunch of violence here as well. Some of it comes with some CGI help but for the most part, it’s effective anyway. This is a movie that makes you feel sorry at times for what is the bad guy. And for all intents and purposes, The Joker is a bad guy. But this one makes you feel bad for him at times and then tries to make you feel a bit mixed because you feel for him in ways but then again he’s doing some very bad things. I can see why people loved this movie and I would agree in saying that it’s one of the year’s best. It packs some great performances and a solid plot. The ending is a little iffy to me because I feel that it doesn’t always feel like the rest of the movie but I still liked this one A LOT and I can see where all the hype comes from regarding it.
