Killer Campout (2017) (DVD REVIEW)
STARRING: Herschell Gordon Lewis, George Stover, John A. Russo
AVAILABLE FROM Wild Eye Releasing

Two youth counselors bring a group of emotionally troubled teens deep into the woods for a weekend of solitude and confrontational therapy. The trip turns deadly when they are terrorized by a cannibalistic hermit with a thirst for blood.

Killer Campout probably stands out to the most of you due to the fact it is using a cover that looks a whole heck of a lot like the cover for The Mutilator. But this is a movie that seems to be making it its mission to be a throwback to old school slashers, so we can probably let that one pass. The harder thing to let pass is that outside of the killers in the movie, everyone else is pretty cookie-cutter. Everyone is walking around just looking at all sorts of generic. We have our lead and her boyfriend, we have our token black guy, and everyone else is just there. Outside of a couple of naked chicks (one being porn star Nadia White who you may recognize from x-rated movies on TubeV Sex), none of the people really seem to matter. That can be a problem because even slashers of the 80s usually tried to give the characters more of a personality or gimmick before they killed everyone off. Don’t get me wrong here, it isn’t all bad. The kills are pretty good but we need a little something more to hold us down and keep us watching until they happen.

Our killer starts off as just a solo act that catches, kills, and eats people, but through the twists and turns of the movie, things get a bit more complicated. Maybe too complicated as I feel we often are getting swerves for the sake of swerves. I don’t mind a good twist in a movie, but things here tend to let that get a little out of control and pretty soon you aren’t sure just how many folks aren’t who they are supposed to be and just where did they come from anyway? Killer Campout does a fine job with the kills and even the main killer, everything else is a bit more mixed. If you like slashers you’ll probably want to give this one a chance, but other than that its not the best things we’ve seen as of late.
