Leprechaun Returns (2018) (BLU-RAY REVIEW)
DIRECTED BY: Steven Kostanski
STARRING: Taylor Spreitler, Linden Porco, Mark Holton
AVAILABLE FROM Lionsgate Films

Twenty-five years ago, a young woman and her friends stopped an evil Leprechaun by shoving a four-leaf clover in its mouth and watching its melting body fall into a well in North Dakota. What happened to his pot of gold is anyone’s guess. Today, the property is run by the AU Sorority House of a premiere Eco-science college. A group of students decides to spend their summer vacation turning the house into a perfect “green” living abode. And it would be challenging enough, without the depraved Leprechaun they unwittingly revive. Now he’s back and determined to get his gold by teaching these ladies a lesson in murder. Except, they aren’t having it. The women band together to find his gold and add, taking down a misogynistic Leprechaun to their course load.

Following what has become a very popular thing in the world of horror, Leprechaun Returns follows just the original Leprechaun movie and ignores the rest. Yes, they are ignoring going to space and to the hood (and then back to the hood). But in this case that might not be a bad thing. We also have a member of Astron-6 in Steve Kostanski taking over the director duties and the results aren’t too bad! I know a lot of people were ready to run for the hills when they heard we were both having this movie debut on the SyFy Channel and recasting Warick Davis, but our new Leprechaun isn’t bad and our new Leprechaun movie isn’t bad either. As a matter of fact, this one is bloody and full of comedy that touches a bit on the short (but sweet) glory days of the Leprechaun franchise. Perhaps what works the best here is a clear dose of nostalgia, as this one brings back old characters and has a direct connection to Jennifer Aniston’s character in the original with our new leading lady playing her daughter returning to the place the events of the original movie took place.

We have some typical characters and we have some typical things, but this IS a slasher movie, right? I don’t mind such things in this case, as this movie manages to pack some very funny moments with some cool kills that I think stand out a bit above the usual. Putting Steve Kostanski in the director’s chair was a great movie and I think he’s what makes this movie work. No, it isn’t written by him but you can still get that same vibe from it and I think if you have enjoyed his work with Astron-6 that you’ll find some stuff in here to like as well. I don’t know if this will be the last time we see this version of our Leprechaun killer but this movie can at least say it was way better than at least the last few movies we got in this series before this one. It might just be the best since the original, with that one still perhaps having a bit of an edge over this.
