The sanctity of marriage goes straight to hell when a young bride (Samara Weaving) competes in a time-honored tradition with her new husband (Mark O’Brien) and his insanely rich and eccentric Le Domas family (Adam Brody, Henry Czerny, and Andie MacDowell). The bride’s wedding night takes a turn for the worst when she realizes she is at the center of a lethal game of ‘Hide and Seek’ and must fight her not-so-loveable in-laws for her own survival.

As if getting married isn’t scary enough, try getting married into the family our leading lady and the newly wedded bride does in Ready or Not. Apparently this family has everyone who comes into the family draw a playing card and whatever the game is they have to play it. This usually results in checkers or such but if they draw the “Ready or Not” game it results in the life or death game of hide and seek. If the family doesn’t kill the newly inducted family member before sunrise they believe they will be destroyed due to a deal they seem to have made with a man who might be the devil. As luck would have it she draws that card and the movie is off and running. What follows is a mean spirited but fun time with some blood and some dark humor.

Samara Weaving plays the new bride here and she is outstanding in the role. She’s been pretty much great in everything I’ve seen her in and that continues here with this. The movie is clever enough as is, but she makes it as memorable as it turns out to be. The movie has some twists and turns along the way. You can never be too sure what will come next and some of what comes is legit surprising. Ready or Not ends up being one of the year’s best and it’s just as fun as it can be tense. It will make you laugh one minute, jump the next, and then shock you after that. If you’ve not seen Ready or Not yet, then I don’t think you should let the year-end without giving it a watch.
