The Clovehitch Killer (2018) (Blu-ray Review)
DIRECTED BY: Duncan Skiles
STARRING: Dylan McDermott, Charlie Plummer, Samantha Mathis

Tyler Burnside (Charlie Plummer, All The Money In The World) is a Boy Scout, a volunteer at his local church, and the dutiful son of an upstanding, community leader dad (Dylan McDermott, American Horror Story). Only one thing troubles the quiet Kentucky town he lives in: the unsolved murders — in which ten women were brutally tortured and killed by a psychopath known as Clovehitch — that rocked the community more than a decade ago. When Tyler discovers a cache of disturbing images in his father’s possession, he begins to suspect that the man he trusts most in the world may be Clovehitch … and that his deadly rampage may not be over. With unrelenting tension, director Duncan Skiles crafts a picture-perfect vision of the American family … and then rips it to shreds.

In all honesty, The Clovehitch Killer doesn’t try to wow us with bells and whistles, but it is as solid as they come and gives us a very good story with some very tense moments. You have a kid here who think his dad might be a murderer from years back in his home town. He finds a girl who has a deep interest in the case that he decides to get to help him investigate and we have our plot. This is a movie that can’t seem to get a mention without someone bringing us Summer of ’84. Now, I seem to be one of the few that liked Summer ’84 better based on the nostalgic factors of the ’80s but this one makes for a good companion with it and offers up enough tense situations to make you very uncomfortable at times while watching it. It’s a bit early to be talking about the best movies of 2019, but I feel at the moment like this is clearly one you’ll see popping up on those lists come December and so-on.

This movie is the type of movie that just wouldn’t work with good actors and it has those and it works very well. Regardless of age, you’ll find some good character work from top to bottom in this one. It isn’t really a gore-fest or anything like that, which I could see being a bit of a turn-off for some. But this just isn’t that type of movie. This is more about the story and such than it is anything like the kills. That could be a “make it or break it” for many who watch it, but if you want something that’s just very interesting to watch, then you should be checking out The Clovehitch Killer as soon as you get the chance. It makes you feel uneasy and it makes you think a bit from time to time as well.
