The Dead Don’t Die (2019) (BLU-RAY REVIEW)
DIRECTED BY: Jim Jarmusch
Starring: Adam Driver, Chloë Sevigny, Bill Murray, Selena Gomez
AVAILABLE FROM Universal Studios

It’s the greatest zombie cast ever disassembled starring Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton, Chloë Sevigny, Steve Buscemi, Danny Glover, Caleb Landry Jones, Rosie Perez, Iggy Pop, Sara Driver, RZA, Selena Gomez, Carol Kane, Austin Butler, Luka Sabbat and Tom Waits. In the sleepy small town of Centerville, something is not quite right. The moon hangs large and low in the sky, the hours of daylight are becoming unpredictable and animals are beginning to exhibit unusual behavior. No one foresees the strangest and most dangerous repercussion that will soon start plaguing the town: The Dead Don’t Die – they rise from their graves and savagely attack and feast on the living – and the citizens must battle for their survival.

The Dead Don’t Die is a quirky little zombie movie with a 100% all-star cast. From main stars such as Bill Murray and Adam Driver to big names with smaller roles such as Selena Gomez, Steve Buscemi, Danny Glover, and lots more. Literally everywhere you look is someone you should know pretty quickly. The movie is set-up to be a dry and fun time but for some reason, the scariest thing I find about this movie is how it doesn’t seem to really work. The joke aspect of it that I’m sure was looking good on paper just seems to fall flat on the screen and all those names seem to sadly be sleeping walking through this whole film. The running jokes run out of steam, the zombie stuff is mostly what we’ve seen before, and the more dry moments don’t hit like I’m sure they should. The movie just seems too big to get that indie vibe and too indie to get that mainstream glow. It’s an odd situation.

If you told to try to find something positive to say about it I’d probably go with some of the violence and gore. While we have a clear indication of CGI being used more times than not, as far as how the zombies look and some of the chaos they cause, some of it works pretty well. It’s also kind of fun to just see which famous person shows up next. Sure, we could have had a little more screen time for such people like Selena Gomez but the stuff that happens here at least works when you take into account that it’s at least unpredictable. I just wish at the end of the day we had a stronger performance from folks and a better movie overall, as this one kind of lets us down a bit. The Metta stuff just doesn’t work most the time here. Also, I want to add some of this looks too dark. I think it might be because they seem to have shot some day for night and made it dark.
