Oscar®-nominee* Barbara Hershey (the Insidious series, Black Swan) stars as Carla Moran, a hard-working single mother whose life becomes a nightmare when she is attacked in her bedroom by someone – or something – that she cannot see. Disbelieved by her friends and dismissed by skeptical psychiatrists, Carla begins to lose her grip as she is repeatedly attacked in her car, in the bath, and even in front of her children. Could this be a case of hysteria, a manifestation of childhood sexual trauma, or something even more horrific? Seeking help from a group of daring parapsychologists, Carla will attempt an unthinkable experiment: to seduce, trap and ultimately capture the depraved spectral fury that is The Entity.

Back in the day, horror movies were being made left and right with the idea that they were based on “true events”. That was the case with The Entity, a movie that’s source is a woman who says she was raped by three spirits and apparently the case was never really solved. That’s what happens here in this one. A normal woman starts being raped by something invisible and if people aren’t just assuming she’s nuts they are actually trying to find her some help. That whole ordeal is the one creepy thing the movie does really well. It has an interesting concept on the surface and it does pack a memorable scene or two along the way, but it is also a movie that times drags its feet a little too much for its own good. That isn’t the only thing holding it down, but that might be the biggest thing it has in its way. Then again, that’s just my opinion. This movie is getting a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray from Scream Factory so somebody out there has to really like it a lot.

The other thing with this for me is that I’m not a big fan of the ending. I feel it leaves a lot to be left to be said and that can be an issue with a lot of people. Sometimes leaving people asking questions is a great thing and it worked for Halloween and Black Christmas around this same time, but I feel this one missed the mark in that regards. Scream Factory doesn’t give us a new transfer here, as you’ll find the same from the old Anchor Bay Blu-ray as well as from the Umbrella one. It does give us a list of new interviews and I think the audio is better best I can tell. But don’t hold me to that one. Still, I’m a little mixed on The Entity, but it does at least have some creepy factor to it.
