Dawa and his mother spend a terrifying night alone in the basement after being tormented by a strange and dangerous presence. Years after his mom’s death, Dawa is forced to return, again facing the presence that once tortured him as a child.

Ghosts, greed, mental issues, and lots more can be found as plot points and themes in the haunting ghost story, The Lingering. The latest Asian ghost story in a long never-ending line of Asian ghost stories starts off very well with a little mood and an eerie tune playing. Heck, I’d say it starts off the most part very good and looking to be another classic in the making. The trouble with this one, however, is it often doesn’t seem to stick to one tone and it acts as if it might not even be sure of what kind of movie it really wants to be. Because of this, an otherwise ghost story that should be a bit more simple gets pretty complicated by the end and not in what I’d go out of my way to call a good way.

I feel the acting is probably the best thing about this one. And even in the case of that, some of these actors are a bit tripped up over the odd ways of the movie. I dig the themes this one talks about for the most part, but I feel it would have been best had it just played more along the line as a straight forward horror story than getting a bit sidetracked along the way with the other stuff. We also have an issue with some pretty spotty CGI in this one. I always loathed the sight of CGI but over the years in some cases, I’ve seen it done well and it has made me a little lighter on it. This movie sets me back into my early 2000’s mind frame on it. So, all in all, The Lingering has its moments. But it also has moments where it cuts off its own nose despite its face and that’s a bummer.
