The Principal (1987) (BLU-RAY REVIEW)
DIRECTED BY: Christopher Cain

Rick Latimer is a teacher who gets a job as the principal of a school with a very bad reputation. In fact, his transfer there is a kind of punishment because he beat his wife’s boyfriend. So, Rick finds himself in a school where drugs, knives and guns are very usual things…

It might be safe to say that for one to like a movie like this one has to like James Belushi. Seeing as how I do, I found this film entertaining and exciting. Maybe even better than it often gets credit for in some regard. Belushi takes a job as a principal at a tough inner city high school where he must contend with many problems there. Louis Gossett Jr. also turns in a strong performance as the custodian who befriends Belushi. From there is an action thriller that does at times find a moment or two to have a laugh. I think that makes for a good mix and makes for a movie that does what it needs to and never does seem to get dull. Often times if you can accomplish that alone you have a movie worthy of a good score here and I will given one in reflection to just that.

“The Principal” is that type of movie for someone like you if you like other such movies as “To Sir with Love”, “Class of 1984” and “Dangerous Minds”, where a teacher faces difficulties in a problematic high-school with the students dominated by gangs. James Belushi performs one of his best roles as Rick Latimer, a school teacher that has destroyed all opportunities in life and now has no other option but stay at the notorious Brandel High School. The rest you will find is pretty solid as well. The movie doesn’t have any extras to go along with it but it does look very nice in HD here and can top those old DVDs and VHS tapes I’m sure some of you probably still have from back in the day.
