Rachel Keller is a journalist investigating a videotape that may have killed four teenagers (including her niece). There is an urban legend about this tape: the viewer will die seven days after watching it. If the legend is correct, Rachel will have to run against time to save her son’s and her own life.

Remakes can be tricky! They can also get pretty messy. When dealing with foreign films that get stateside remakes things can be even worse, but I’m happy to admit that one of the few times this was done right was way back in 2002 with the American version of The Ring. With Naomi Watts in the leading role, The Ring sets forth with a legit creepy concept and makes for one heck of a movie that is actually scary. That’s something that is very hard to accomplish. Back in a time when VHS was still something, this story about a cursed tape was a very fun and scary watch. Heck, the first time I saw it was in a movie theater and that only made the experience all the more fun. The visuals alone on this cursed tape are the stuff nightmares are made of and it works really well here. Just about everything here works really well here.

Of course, it all isn’t just doom and gloom as we have a story here as well. As time ticks away on our leads and they try to find out what it will take to save themselves we open up all sorts of ideas and get lots of answers but we also get lots of questions. All of this leads up to an ending that is one of the more surprising endings I’ve seen. It might not have been that shocking had you seen the original, however. In 2002 The Ring was one of the best horror movies of the year and it is still a solid one now. Especially when compared to the last one that came out a couple of years ago. Maybe one of these days we’ll get a solid Ring movie again, but until then we still have the American version which is a classic if you ask me.
