The Shield (The Complete Series) (DVD REVIEW)
Created By: Shawn Ryan
STARRING: Michael Chiklis, Catherine Dent, Walton Goggins
AVAILABLE FROM Mill Creek Entertainment

Controversial, compelling and critically acclaimed, THE SHIELD, reinvented the police genre and gave us one of the greatest antiheroes in television history. Vic Mackey, a corrupt cop, runs his elite Strike Team under his own set of rules, bringing conflict to the streets of Los Angeles and within his precinct.

The Shield was a very influential show that ran on TV from 2002 to 2008. The show is now DVD from Mill Creek Entertainment and might be a good buy for those of you who for whatever reason missed their Blu-ray release of the show. Starring Michael Chiklis and noticed for its portrayal of corrupt police officers, it was originally advertised as Rampart in reference to the true life Rampart Division police scandal, on which the show’s Strike Team was loosely based. The series was created by Shawn Ryan and The Barn Productions for Fox Television Studios and Sony Pictures Television. From the very first episode, you knew you were in for something like you had never seen before, as the show has one of the more famous first episodes you’ll see out there with one of the more shocking and surprising endings you’ll find. It set the tone for what was to come with the show and all of that is here along with 70 hours of bonus stuff to keep you watching after you’ve binged your way through this on a re-watch or for the first time.

All seven seasons are here, making for a series of 88 episodes. That gives you 18 discs of stuff to see when you pick this one up. There are lots of great story arcs and lots of great actors that grace the screen in this one. There is also a lot of stuff that happens and then comes back into play later on, which I think is just a great sign of storytelling and making what happens on the show really seem to matter. I don’t know if I’d say that the show finished as well as it starts, but you get it all here and when all is watched you can see why everyone loved The Shield. Vic Mackey is also one of the most complex and interesting characters you’ll see on the screen and I think it is safe to say he made the show what it ended up being in the end. He’s not a good guy by any means, but he really pulls you into his story until the very end.
