Trapped Alive (1988) (BLU-RAY REVIEW)
DIRECTED BY: Leszek Burzynski
STARRING: Cameron Mitchell, Jay Leggett, Sullivan Hester

One wintry night, pals Robin and Monica are making their way to a Christmas party when they’re carjacked by a gang of crooks recently escaped from the local penitentiary. With the two young women taken as hostages, things take an even darker turn when their vehicle plummets down an abandoned mine shaft, trapping them underground with the dangerous crooks – and a mutant cannibal.

Trapped Alive is about a couple of convics that force another convict to go with them on a trip as they escape, but they stop and kidnap a couple of girls along the way. Now that might be enough in your mind for a good movie right there, but this is the 80’s here (even if the film wasn’t released until the ’90s) and they just have to add even more to the plot. That more comes in the form of these folks all getting trapped in a mine and having a killer cannibal on the loose down there with them! It might sound a little silly and over the top (and it kind of is) but it makes for an interesting story with some blood, blood, and some scenes that reminded me just a tiny bit of a film we all know called The Descent. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t anywhere on that level but we do have elements that might remind some folks of it. Trapped Alive might look to some like a movie that mostly just offers up a pretty cool poster, but I think the movie is a bit better now than most people probably thought it was when it came out.

We have a pretty cool cast of characters here. One being your typical final girl in a role that I think turned out to be here only gig. Which is a shame because she could have probably been a final girl for any movie of this time she wanted to be. And a sort of gimmicked bad guy who runs around with a birthmark on his face. Neither of those two things are without even mentioning the killer cannibal on the loose either. Arrow is doing a great job of finding movies that even I have never heard of and bringing them to Blu-ray. This takes another one out of a bit of obscurity and gives it some new life. And for my money, I don’t think this one is too shabby either. It isn’t a perfect film but it’s a fun one anyway. And it looks pretty good here in HD as well. We also have a very nice selection of extras to go along with this one.
