Trick (2019) (BLU-RAY REVIEW)
DIRECTED BY: Patrick Lussier
STARRING: Jamie Kennedy, Tom Atkins, Omar Epps

On Halloween night in 2015, Patrick “Trick” Weaver massacred his classmates at a costume party. After being arrested, he managed to escape police custody, but not before being shot five times by Detective Mike Denver (Epps). Everyone believes Trick must be dead, but when a masked killer reappears the following Halloween, and every Halloween after that, they realize the nightmare is not over. With Trick wreaking havoc and killing innocent people in increasingly terrifying ways, Denver will stop at nothing to finish what he started and bring the carnage to an end.

Let’s be honest here, folks. You may have a good slasher hitten somewhere deep down inside Trick but it’s all covered up somewhere with a whole lot of cringe! The movie starts off strong enough with a kid going crazy and slicing people up at a party but not long after that the plot gets a bit more complicated than it needs to be and before it ends it has done gone and spiraled out into a whole other type of movie that kills the goodwill you might have built up for it before. I could be guilty of going into this one with too much expected but what this could have been and what it ends up being is pretty unfortunate. You eventually get too many masks and too much going on. Had they kept this one simple I think we’d have had a much better result.

I know the slasher film seems to be a lost art these days. People seem to want to make them with a little something extra. It’s like they are trying to reinvent the wheel. But sometimes you just gotta stick to the basics and that’s where Trick makes a big mistake, it goes too far off the rails. You end up with some cool kills but that’s about the best thing I can say about it. I don’t see this as a new age slasher that anyone really looks back to down the road. It was a nice try I suppose but it’s one where they are trying way too hard and it shows.
