DIRECTED BY: Jamie Blanks
STARRING: Denise Richards, Marley Shelton, David Boreanaz

Revenge is sweet, just like Valentine’s Day chocolates. At least, that is what a vengeful, Cupid-masked killer thinks. Be my Valentine … or else. Broken hearts and other mortal wounds await a cast of contemporary young stars when they play dating-scene veterans dying for love in this humor-laced, twist-filled thriller cleverly directed by Jamie Blanks (Urban Legend) and starring David Boreanaz (Angel, Bones), Denise Richards (Starship Troopers), Marley Shelton (Scream 4, Planet Terror), Katherine Heigl (Grey’s Anatomy) and more. Cards, candy and flowers are nice. But for fans of stalker-shocker terror, there’s nothing like a Valentine.

Valentine was another one of those post-Scream slashers that came out during the end of the 90s and the start of the 2000s. If you didn’t even know the year going into it I’m sure you’d be able to tell based on the looks of things alone. This is also probably the second most watched Valentines Day horror film on the market outside the original My Bloody Valentine and fighting the remake. Regardless, a kid got picked on at a Valentines Day dance and apparently is back and killing off the girls that rejected him at the dance. But the kicker this time is that he probably looks nothing like he did before and as a result, we have one of those “who done it?” slashers that were so popular around the time. Some people seem to not care much for this one but I don’t mind. I’ve heard some say its soo much like an 80s slasher and that is one of the key reasons why I don’t mind it. It can get pretty violent, some of the kills are creative, and it does feel like the ’80s at times. That’s never a bad combo to me.

I got into movies like this looking for a cool looking killer who is taking people out in creative ways and I think we get that here. We have some familiar faces as well like Denise Richards, Marley Shelton, and Katherine Heigl. You also get David Boreanaz of Angel and Buffy fame. If you want a mindless slasher that is a little silly but still fun I’d say give this one a shot. Also, Scream Factory really loaded this one with extras! We get lots of interviews here and most are pretty entertaining. You even get an audio commentary, music video, and hidden easter egg. All in all, I dug it and I dig this release. It’s not Scream by any means but it holds up well enough against other slashers that came out around the same time.
