Victory (1981) (BLU-RAY REVIEW)
DIRECTED BY: John Huston
Starring: Michael Caine, Sylvester Stallone, Max von Sydow

In World War II, a group of Nazi officers come up with a propaganda event in which an all star Nazi team will play a team composed of Allied Prisoners of War in a Soccer (Football) game. The Prisoners agree, planning on using the game as a means of escape from the camp.

It’s The Longest Yard meets The Great Escape in this Stallone movie that might just fly under your radar if you just aren’t “in the know” about it. This is a movie that packs a great score as well as the cinematography and all of that comes without mentioning the acting, which is good too. Even if you disregard the lack of aesthetic qualities, and think too much about the reality of it all, it’s worth watching if only to see again a few of the great past-masters of what the British like to call “the beautiful game” (that being soccer). And Sylvester Stallone as a goalkeeper is something to be seen to believe. It seems like ol’ Sly was never one to shy away from some different roles back in the day and this is one that fits that area. I think he’s one of the highlights of the movie really.

Now I’ll have no other choice than to admit that there were a couple of areas in this where the plot was rather too predictable and places where I simply thought it was completely unbelievable all in the same plot. However, at the end of the day I would recommend this movie. It’s fun and, at times, even a bit touching. It looks great here in HD from Warner Archive, but like a number of titles such as this you won’t find a whole heck of a lot in the way of extras. Here in this one we just have a trailer. Still, the movie is solid and worth watching if you want to give something new a chance.
